    Is this water belly ?

One of my girls has had a bit of a bare bottom for a while, and I finally checked her out today as she’s super skittish and very hard to catch. It is squishy. Does this seem like water belly? She’s very active and doesn’t seem sick in anyway, which was also another reason I didn’t check on this...

    Quails are savage

3 week old chicken chicks (silkie polish mix) in a brooder with 4week and 2 week old quail chicks. 4 week old is “head hen”, terrorizing the little ones the moment they were introduced, no surprises there. The Polkies grew up with juvie quail and her siblings so they get along very well. But...

    Roo fixated on one hen

I have a hen who is plucked bald and partially scalped. I’ve separated her so that she can still see the rest of the covey. Whenever she’s separated, the Roo constantly wants to get to her through the wire partition. There are 9 other hens he could choose from, and while he does mount the...

    First time bumblefoot

I noticed my oldest hen was not as mobile and stood more on one feet. Since it’s in the 10-20s I thought she was just cold, but decided to check her feet just in case. It looks like she has bumblefoot. There seems to be a giant kernel but very little swelling. it is obviously causing her...

    Grass

I’ve been feeding my chickens grass. Not the stuff from my lawn mower, I pick out the variety that I know they love to eat ( I believe it’s perennial rye) and chop it up to short little bits with scissors and supplementing their diet. Been getting some really nice tasty yolks!

Are store bought brown eggs sometimes dyed?

I know this is crazy, but hear me out. I have chickens that lay dark brown eggs, and they are always smooth and shiny. but back in the day when I bought the cheapest brown eggs from the store they always felt chalky to the touch. I thought it was weird, and that they might have been dyed, but...

Grain Mites in Purina Flock Raiser

Brought home a crazy infestation of grain mites with my latest purchase of purina flock raiser. Didn’t catch it until it spread to my bag of layer feed and cat food :( It seems that permethrin would have been an ideal course of action if it werent for my cats sharing the same room as my...

    Inbreeding concerns

i just hatched a few goslings, and I'm debating on whether to keep a pair, one of my major concerns is inbreeding. From my understanding the original F1(?) pair were hatched from the same batch of eggs from a very small pair or trio of geese, so they are likely to be siblings. The gosling that...

    Deck screws 3 year update

Just a random update about the hardware I chose for my coop… 3 years ago I built my own coop out of pallets and salvaged wood, as per a populate recommendation here, I put it all together with deck screws, for shallower fastenings I used stainless steel. Last week I modded my coop for the...

How did your mean day olds turn out?

I just hatched 3 goslings. Gosling number 1 hatched a week ago, he’s cute, a little nibbly, but nothing crazy. Gosling number 3 just hatched and seem to be on the same developmental timeline as gosling number 1. But omg gosling number 2…? Gosling number 2 is a bitey little terror, she bites...

Chinese goose egg - how many days until hatch?

I *think* Chinese goose… they’re white with red bills [shrugs]. A week ago I got six of these eggs from a friends whose goose hatched a few and abandoned the rest. I have a tiny bantam chicken sitting on the three that ended up being viable. Today I noticed that the egg that had the most...
