Killer came back and buried them in the shavings - what does that?

A traumatic night. Around 2am we heard the hens screaming for their lives. By the time we rushed outside, two hens were dead in their yard -one a full size girl and one a bantam. Their necks were bitten. We locked up the others, but the predator returned in the night and buried the two dead...

    I want to peek!

Robin has been sitting on fertile eggs for 20 days. Yesterday (Day 19) I heard peeping and got a glimpse of a yellow chick head peeking out! I want to see what else is going on under her, but she gets upset if I even look at her. Robin is a thousand, no a MILLION times more patient than I...

Cupcake found dead in coop this morning

Went out to check the chickens at before dawn and found Cupcake lying on the coop floor dead. She was on her roost with the others last night when I "put them to bed", and was healthy and laid an egg yesterday. It looked like her neck was broken, but I was too sad to examine her closely. Just...

Two broodies - give all chicks to one?

I have two bantam EE broodies (Robin and Henrietta) each sitting on five large size eggs (from a friend, ours aren't fertile). Both girls are 7 months old and doing great! Robin's nest is in a nice grow-out pen and Henrietta is in a cat carrier. Robin's eggs are due to hatch about 24 hours...

Integration went well, but. . .

I did it. I have two mini flocks - seven bantam ee's age 3 months and five mixed large size girls, age 5 months. Each little flock has her own coop. For two months they have been separated in the big chicken yard by chicken wire, so they were well acquainted thought the mesh. Finally the big...

Anyone else ever had a rooster do this?

Our little Cinnabun, an EE bantam roo was very quiet. Until yesterday. We had given away his nine noisy brothers the night before but we kept Cinnabun, who is beautiful and WAS quiet. Cinnabun popped out of his home to find himself the king of the yard, the lone male with 7 little pullets...

HUGE crop swinging from side to side when she runs

Henrietta is 11 weeks old and has always had a pretty big crop, even as a tiny chick, but now it is gigantic. It literally swings from side to side when she runs - towards any food. It feels neither hard nor too squishy, but it is just so BIG. Her poops are normal. She doesn't seem in any...

How do you decide which roos to keep?

Technically I'm not supposed to keep ANY roos. But I got a straight run batch and have ten bantam ee roosters to rehome. Naturally, I've fallen in love with a few of them. I'm wondering if it would be possible to keep a couple of the quietest ones. I have 7 bantam ee pullets and 5 large size...

What does it mean? A kiss?

What does it mean when chickens lightly touch each other's beaks? I've seen it from newly hatched babies to adult chickens. This is not agressive pecking, just the lightest kiss-like touch. ARE they kissing? It does seem to happen with chickens who especially like one another.

Combining Flocks - Get rid of excess roosters first or not?

Here is the situation: I have two small flocks. One is a group of 5 calm sweet 4-month-old large size girls, 2 Cuckoo Marans, 2 Delawares and one BO. The other flock is 17 7-week-old Bantam EE's. The big girls have their own house; the little bantams have their own house too. My hope is...

Cinnabun 6 week old Bantam EE - Girl?

Here is dear little Cinnabun, a six week old Bantam EE chick. She is the only one of my 17 who has the brown partridge coloring common to female EE's and I so much want to keep her. She is affectionate and calm, loves to be picked up and held. I love that she is getting white muffs, such a...

Bantam EE runt? Help for little Wilbur? Photos

8 days ago my order of 15 EE Bantams arrived from Cackle. Cackle added two extras so I have 17 darling peeping little bantam EEs. One was a bit smaller than the others, but EEs can vary quite a bit in size so I wasn't worried. At first. However, as the others grew normally, little Wilbur...

Please tell me Butterscotch is a girl - PHOTOS added

Here is my 4 week old Buff Orpington Butterscotch who is showing roo-ish signs. Has anyone had a BO who looked like this at 4 weeks and then went on to lay eggs and cackle? I fear this will be a repeat of the old Blaine (cute roo EE) from my last flock. Thank you.
