I've had to isolate one of my hens since Sunday for a prolapsed vent. Each day I brought her out to visit in a kennel so the other chickens wouldn't "forget" her, but I think I screwed up today when I let her out because now a couple of my hens (I have 8 hens total; no rooster) are chasing and...
My roo was just given a shot of Ivermectin by the vet and he's on an antibiotic and pain meds...but he's still managing to fertilize all my eggs. :-) Are they safe to eat...even for my little kids?
Thanks!
I'm coming to terms with the fact that my 2-year-old roo may have chronic arthritis. The vet and I can't figure out what else it could be. He appears in good shape (except he still doesn't roost at night) when he is on metacam, but since my vet charges $60 for a 2-week supply, that is not...
A couple of posters yesterday helped me determine that my barred rock rooster probably has scaly leg mites so I have started treating him for those, but now someone posted earlier today with pics of a barred rock roo with *definite* scaly leg mites...and she said the mites didn't seem to be...
My 10 pound barred rock rooster appears to have red and swollen "knee" joints that seem to be making him lame. Both of his feet and both of his legs also appear to be swollen. He now chooses not to roost at night and is prone to episodes of tipping over--almost like he has a "trick knee". He...
I have a pullet with a reasonable amount of blood along the side/bottom of her small comb and I can't seem to find the answers I need in the FAQ's or through a quick search of the archives (the posts there all mention products I don't have on hand!)
1. The blood seems to be congealed so I'm not...
Anyone have any clever tricks to keep a rooster quiet for just a little longer in the morning? He is *inside* the hen house overnight, but the sound isn't muffled as much as I had hoped because, of course, this time of year the windows are all open for ventilation.
I have a permit to keep him...
This morning a hawk swooped down into our yard just after I let the chickens out of the run. Thankfully it didn't get any of my birds, but now I'm paranoid. They free-range in our yard and have plenty of cover, but I'm scared to let them back out of the covered run...but I can't imagine not...
I have a 14-wk-old buff orpington that was injured on Saturday evening when a canoe tipped over on her in the yard. At first I thought I was going to lose her because initially she couldn't walk, but she is almost back to normal now (just a little slow, like she's sore) and is eating...
I'm pretty sure she's a pullet, but we've had two others of a different breed that are for sure roosters and we don't have a permit for roosters, so now I'm paranoid! None of the other breeds her age have much of a comb at all. She's 11 weeks old. Do barred rocks just mature much more quickly in...
