    Sudden Death

Today I found one of my four Red Sex Links dead in the corner of the run. At 10 AM all came running as they always have done when I toss in a handful of scratch. At noon I tossed a handful of grapes that they enjoy. At 230 I found her dead with the feathers and skin of her lower back gone and...

    Leg Problem-Sprained Maybe?

I have four 10 week New Hampshire hens. I noticed today that one is favoring her left leg/foot. I looked at prior messages to see if it was a break or sprain? She hobbles around on her "knuckle" and that is a little roughed up but I cannot see or feel any breaks or blood. When I pick her up...

    Whats wrong with this neck?

4 hens about 2.5 years old. Getting one egg a day and lots of feathers so someone is molting. Last week this one looked fine then today I noticed her neck. A little spot of blood too. She seems to be eating and moving about ok, but tends to stay in the coop when the others are in the...

    Lethargic Hen

I have 4 red layers about 2.5 years old. One has been lethargic for the last week. See stays by herself under cover most times and does not socialize with the others much. Seems to be drawn in with head and wings and legs tucked in. Appears to eat with the rest from what I can tell. Last...

Solitary Hen Roosting in the Run

I have four, 2 year old red layers and get 3-4 eggs per day. Tonight is the first night that one of the hens is roosting on a branch in the run while the others roost in the coop as usual. I have been letting them free range for a few hours when I get home from work and they always make their...

    Egg Bound or Soft Shell?

It was unusual that my 4 hens only produced 3 eggs the last two days. Last night at dusk I noticed one in the nest box as if laying. But today only 3 eggs. She scratched around with the others when i let them out of the run to free range. I noticed her feathers seemed a bit full below...

    Compost as feed, sorta

I compost everything from the kitchen and office in my backyard, three bin system. Coffee grounds, veggie scraps, donuts, pasta, meat...anything that will biodegrade when mixed with shredded leaves except bones. In warmer weather its a hot pile and the items are "gone" in a few days. No...

Nest Box Paint color for privacy

I painted the coop inside with gloss white for brightness and ease of cleanup and the same with the external attached nest boxes. Should I have painted the boxes a darker color for more privacy? Black maybe. The boxes will be attached soon so I can paint again if needed.

    How long to adjust?

We picked up our first chickens, 4 started pullets on Saturday, 72 hours ago. The coop was not finished the first night and they huddled under it. The next night 2 huddled under, one in and one at the open pop door. Last night two inside and two on the pop door. They don't seem to be eating...

    Modifed Purina Coop Design

I took the basic design found on BYC and along with what I learned on BYC built my first coop for four birds. When placing the floor on the uprights I screwed a block on each upright 18 inches from the bottom to hold the floor assembly in place while I screwed it to each of the uprights. Also...

    Digging Predator Visits

Are the small animals a digginig threat? Is a two inch soil interval between the bottom wood sill of the coop and run and the top of the buried chain link a concern? Will a coyote or fox dig under and thru a 2 inch opening? Trying to get some perspective on what I have read about predators...

hardware cloth vs welded wire for run roof

I just finished framing a 4 ft W x 10 ft H x 4 ft H run. The sides are covered with hardware cloth. the roof is flat and will likey have a tarp for shade and rain. Any downside to using 2x4 inch welded wire fence for the top since no predator can reach in from the top? The wire could reduce...

How high to build the run and cover it with what?

Besides the chickens using it, how frequent and for what purpose would a person need to get into it, assuming their need to scratch is met elsewhere? I am thinking of a 4x4 foot Purina Coop with an attached 12 foot run extending from it for 4 birds. The egg box and cleanout door would be...

    Coop Design Questions

I am planning a coop and attached run. The coop portion will be about a 4 foot cube with a gable roof that extends out another 6 feet. The coop will sit off the ground for a total run footprint of 4 x 10 feet. One side of the coop will provide access for cleaning and the other will have an...
