I was getting rid of the "dud" eggs from a hatch today and to my surprise found this chick in one of the eggs. (All others were undeveloped) I left the bottom half of the shell with him and stuck him back under mom but the 2 times I've gone out to check on him, he is buried under her in the...
I'm selling some of our silkies today. The first one I'm pretty sure is a hen. #2 and 3 my husband wants to keep one of them because they have a white beak - I think they might both be roos though. If they look like they could be then I will add them to the sell pen!
Thank you!!

We lost 2 birds last night/this morning plus 8 chicks.
These 2 likely came out of the coop early in the morning before I got out there so they were exposed to predators(everyone else was still in the run unhurt and we will be fixing that gap today)
bird #1 Teenage SLW completely eaten except for...
I hatched chicks out of a dozen brown eggs - the place I got the eggs from sells New Hampshires, EE, Production Reds - this is the only one that has the black speckles around the neck so what is she? A mix of these?
Hubby thinks pullet - I say cockerel. I hope he is right though! It is about 10.5 weeks old. I have 3 really good pictures but for some reason it will not let me upload those (says that it is not a jpeg but it is) so here are the 3 that it will let me upload. Hopefully they are good enough...
I had a bunch of eggs under a broody hen - 7 hatched out (i died due to a freak accident - moms feather wrapped around it's neck?!) Anyways, 3 eggs left and I could tell she wasn't going to sit on them once I put food in the area for the hatched babies. So I took them into the bator - Babies...
This little girl came home from the feed store with us since they didn't know what to do with her. I thought it was splay/spraddle legs at first so she has had the band-aid between her legs for the last 2 weeks. She gets around ok with the band-aid but when I take it off, that one leg slips out...
Obviously content enough to fall asleep
I realize this is not a chicken and maybe there is a better place to post this - just tell me and I will move it!
Hubby found this little one mowing the lawn and I have no idea what to do with it. It is old enough to flutter and hop around but not...
On Saturday morning we lost 10 of our chickens...3 were missing completely, 1 body had an eaten neck, another bodies abdomen was eaten some, the rest were just killed but untouched. We suspected a dog since it seems like a lot were killed for fun and they were all over the yard. Why didn't they...
I had 2 hens go broody but I didn't have the kind of fertile eggs I wanted. So I went to a local farm that sells chicks and brown eggs and set the eggs. The eggs were brown, a few may have been slightly tinted. The farm sells these chicks so that should narrow your choices: New Hampshire Reds...
One of our broody hens had her eye crusted shut a few days ago. We helped loosen it a little and it is oozing a lot so she rubs it on her back. I was checking on her today and noticed a little tiny light brown or tan bug crawling on her. I tried looking over her for more and I saw one more...
My first time with leghorns and I know that they have larger combs in general but would you say that it is safe to assume we have a boy and girl?
They are 3 weeks which seems so early to me to be able to tell but if so then I like the idea of leghorns!
Both
"Boy"
"Girl"
I have read some on this topic but then I got to thinking about it a little more. I have standard size chickens and silkie bantams. My 12 week old standards are about the size of the silkies but still peeping. Do they need to be the size of the standards before I can mix them or would it work...
I'm trying to get my homemade bator stable so I can set some eggs. The temp. is swinging from 105 to 97, the humidity from 55 to 35 (with the temps). I have two pill bottles for ventilation. When I open the one, it goes to 97. If it is closed, 104 or 105.
What I'm wondering is if I could plug...
I've read to have the eggs flat and then rotate a few times a day to prevent the chick from developing lop sided but how does this work if you have them in an egg carton that you are rotating back and forth? Wouldn't you just be rotating them on the same side but end to end? I hope that makes...
Our first time with chicks left us with 7 roos and 1 hen. 5 of the roos found new homes and the hen is laying like a good girl. We are in round 2 now hoping for more layers. What do you think about these little babies? They are about 9 weeks old. You could throw out a name for the black cochin...
