    10 month old EE

I really thought this was a hen, and still kind of do, but I don’t think she’s laying yet and I thought I may have heard a crow the other day? But it wasn’t clear. Haven’t seen any mounting or other behavior that says rooster. There’s also a slight chance she is laying and it’s just the same...

New egg from noir Marans from mt healthy

I got 2 Noir Marans from Mt Healthy at the Ed of April and I got my first pullet egg! They’re a hybrid of a cuckoo Marans and BCM, so I was worried about egg color, but it’s so dark! Lavender Orpington and Easter Egger egg next to it for comparison.

7 week olds transition to flock

I was really worried how this would go, it’s my first time introducing pullets to hens. My first flock of 4 is a year old, and my second 4, 7 weeks. I started just letting them free range occasionally at about 5 weeks old. The hen I was worried about mostly ignored them, but was curious. My...

    First time broody?

So, my 11 month old lavender Orpington was concerning me because she was laying soft shelled eggs. I then haven’t gotten another egg from her in over a week. She goes in the nesting box, but doesn’t seem to stay there longer than her sisters. I tried to move her yesterday and she screeched at...

    EE pattern at 3 weeks?

I know it’s early, but just for fun- this is my EE from Mt Healthy. I only got 2 EE and can only keep one, but I’m hoping to keep this one because I love her poofy cheeks. Last year I had an EE that started getting red shoulders at 3 weeks, but I heard black and white EE get white splotches...

Noir Maran, 2 weeks barring on shoulders?

Noir Marans is a Mt healthy hybrid from a cuckoo marans hen and black copper marans rooster. It creates an auto sexing chick. Anyway, my 2 week chick is having some barring coming in on her shoulders. Her wings are fully black with white wing tips. I can’t imagine she’s a cockeral, right?

    Noir Marans, one looks different?

I got 4 new chicks in the mail from Mt Healthy today. 2 EE and 2 Noir Marans. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to tell the Marans apart, but one is so much more solid black than the other. It has some light on its belly, but its beak and feet are very black, unlike the other one. I haven’t seen...

    Help! Poopy backside

My 9 month old lavender Orpington has had diarrhea for a few days. She seemed much better after I gave her some electrolytes yesterday and came out of the coop with the other hens this morning. But then this afternoon I checked on her and her butt was all poopy. I washed it off, and her vent...

Red Orp and EE 12 weeks sexing

Wondering about my red Orp, pullet or cockerel? She’s just gotten so big! Wondering if she’s just more English Orpington than my buff? Also this EE. Her tail feather looks a bit shiny. 12 weeks

8 weeks old reddening combs and wattles, still pullets?

I’m particularly concerned with the buff Orpington in the front. Their brother is a boy, so I’m super paranoid. Am I in the clear?

Still a pullet? 6 w EE comb changes

My black, white, brown Easter egger has had the color and shape of her comb change this week. It’s pinker and I think it looks like a modified pea comb now? Or still straight comb? I hope she’s still a pullet! My two Easter eggers lead the pack and they came just terrified of everything. I...

Run material rainy area, western Washington

As the title says, I live in western Washington, where it rains most of the winter. My run is basically my side yard, it’s long and narrow. Much bigger than it needs to be based on number of chickens I have. Since it has a wood fence on one side and house on the other, I don’t want to put solid...

Is this a pea comb on EE? Too early to sex?

The first 3 are of the hopeful 4 week 2 day old Easter egger we can keep. Third pic is her body in profile at the bottom of the image. The last is a picture of the one I’m now pretty sure is a cockerel for comparison, tell me if I’m wrong! Also, can you tell if the first one is going to have...

Is this much comb on 4w lavender Orp normal?

I already have one suspected cockerel in my 4 week old sexed pullets (see EE in background). I feel like my 4 week old lavender Orpington’s comb is awfully big, but it could just be because the color doesn’t blend in with her beak as much as the Buff’s does. Is this amount of comb normal for 4...

    Almost 4 week EE patterns

I think I have at least one cockerel in my batch of sexed pullets. I’m bummed because the hassle of rehoming is going to be hard. But I think my reddish one with blue tail feathers is having “her” comb that was already a bit wide get more pinkish. Would you still have hope? Her sister is the...

    Easter Egger reddish 3 weeks

My chicks are a bit over 3 weeks old, one is getting a wider comb than her sister and is having red patches show up on her shoulders, but she also has salmon colored chest feathers and some wing feathers are gray. With the splotchy pattern, is this chick most likely a cockerel or do some pullets...

Brooder feeder 3 week old chicks

Hello! I have a cheap feeder in the brooder, the kind where you screw in a mason jar. They waste so much food! Is there an intermediate feeder where they won’t waste so much? Or do I just suck it up 2-3 more weeks until they can be outside more? Gotta get the run finished! Thanks!

Least flighty/most friendly blue egg layers?

I guess the title says it all. So many choices! Americaunas, Crème legbars, prarie blue bells, Easter Eggers. I’d be fine with green eggs, too. I’m looking for pet like chickens that lay colored eggs, but I want them to be sweet and fairly productive egg layers- don’t have to be superstars...

Which type of combs are these?

I’m wondering if these are pea combs? My two baby Easter eggers that I’m hoping are pullets. I read that if they inherited pea combs, they have a better chance of laying blue or green. I hope it’s true! Can you also tell if they have muffs or beards? It’s my first time and I just see fluffy...
