My EE 'Cooper' laid her first egg....LIGHT TAN!!! I am so disappointed. She has all the Americana characteristics: big muffs, beard and slate legs. I so wanted a green egg. Oh well, they will taste great.
I went to close up the coop for the night and found a smaller pinkish brown egg. Very excited but not sure which one laid it. I have a Barred Rock, Buff Orpington and an EE. Any guesses???
I have a buff orpington, barred rock and an ee I got from the Urban Farm Store (so obviously from a hatchery) 3rd week in September. I was wondering the approximate age they will begin to lay? Still raining hard here - so want to plan on when I will need nesting box. I plan to build a bump...
Yesterday, my barred rock was in a TV commercial. She had to sit on a mechanical 'nest' where an egg rolled down a chute and activated a bunch of mechanical stuff. She is a natural star! All the noise, moving cameras and people and she was perfect. A natural...LOL! Very long day and by the...
My three girls are four months old and are now starting to do some of the cutest things!
Everyday, they free range the back yard but today I went out and they had gone back into the bottom half of their coop, where the sun was shining in, and they were cuddled together, covered in shavings and...
I went out to check the three little darlings (?) and what do I find? They managed to scratch ALL of my leaf mulch from out of the garden and onto the walk ways! What a mess...but nice clean looking flower beds... I can see this 'chicken journey' is going to not only be interesting but...
My son-in-law just came by for coffee and told me that he is going to build me a new chicken coop! What a great Christmas/Birthday promise. I am sooo excited and now will spend every spare minute researching and planning and drooling over BYC'ers coops. ( who am I kidding - who has extra...
Today, for the first time, my three little darlings went back into their coop all by themselves! Being a newbie brings so many little pleasures. They know their home! Yippee...makes me more comfortable when they are out in the yard alone. (hey,' ya gotta go' in the house sometimes)
I am already tired to going out in the rain (Portland OR) in AM/PM to open door. Didn't plan well and have to open from inside coop. So, any recommendations on the best (most reliable) auto door?
I am not sure if a solar powered one would work here in grey Portland - ???
Thanks a bunch!
Need more handholding here... I live in SE Portland, OR and now that my girls are out in the coop and run...I was wondering if it is safe to let them roam around the yard unattended?!?!?
They love being out in the yard (two times, now) but I have stayed out with them so they aren't out for very...
Tonight is the night...first time for three 12 week olds out in their new coop. (fully feathered) I decided to not heat it...even though my stomach is churning and I am worried. It's going to get down to around 35 tonight. Just need someone to tell me that they will be OK so I can try to...
Finally finished the coop and run. Put the three girls in the coop and within a split second they were out into the run. Never seen such happy chickens. Tails high and busily scratching up the pebbles and gobbling up what ever buggies they can find. Chasing each other around the run, just in...
I have recently completed turning an old potting shed into a coop. It has two floors with ramp down to bottom/ground floor. Do I need to put water and feed on both levels or can I just have it on the bottom floor? Or should it be on the top floor with the roots? The pop door to the run is on...
i have a temporary run that has small flat smooth 3/4" to 1" pebbles that are approx 1/4" tall. (they were already in the area I put the run). Should I just use this or put down shavings or sand or???? I am worried that being that size might prevent the chickens from scratching them around and...
Posted this before but didn't get any answers...sigh. What does 'fully fledged' mean and what does it look like? Mine are losing feathers, have lost all of their fuzz but still have bald spots under their arm pits. I want to put them into the coop but not sure when it will be safe for them...
I hear the phrase "fully fledged" referred to but what exactly is that, what do they look like and how can I tell? My three chicks have lost most of their down and have bald areas under their arm pits. I want to move them into the coop but I understand I need to wait until they are fully...
