Friends of mine who are new to ducks bought Runners because the research they did led them to believe that they would eat bugs and not garden plants.
They have discovered the ducks really like pea plants and don't seem to know that they are supposed to eat bugs.
She asked me yesterday how to...
My wonderful little banty hens have gone broody and after hatching some quail eggs for a friend he's given me some guinea eggs to put under them.
Has anyone had experience with doing this?
she's several years old, has picked her favorite nest box and hasn't moved in 4 days.
but she only has one egg under her. I've been leaving it under her thinking that when it doesn't hatch she'll stop brooding.
Is this the right way to go about it? or should I take it away?
on my home and there he was sitting in the road. practically no feathers on his back nor tail. two fifty-cent piece size pieces of skin missing from back and in one of those a puncture wound. legs and wings appear to be ok other than missing feathers. he's shaking from what I can only...
So here's the situation... we decided to get banties because we could fit more of them in our small pen. We were lucky enough to find a home to take all of extra roos (appr. 8). She just loves to hear them crow
Well I did not get any EEs with my mix of banties They turned out to be silkies...
So I went and saw a friends flock today and he tells me that he's going to be ordering some Ameracaunas (sp?) later.
I spy 2 EE's (the lucky dog) in his flock already and tell him of this. That's not what he was supposed to have gotten from the store he tells me, but that's OK.
He tells me...
I tried this last week and it didn't turn out, so I took some more pictures this morning and am trying this again.
They are 9 weeks old. Would also greatly appreciate any thoughts as to there sexes. I know I've got some that "time will tell".
This is Dot or Spot I can never rember which...
Raising two keets for the neighbor and figured I'd move them out in the chicken coop/yard when they got to be as big as the young banties out there, but don't know if I can.
banties are 9 weeks and keets are one week. by the time the keets get to be at least close to the chicks' size...
I've think I remember hearing many moons ago that the temp of the egg determines the sex of the chick. My hubby also says this.
Have any of you heard of or had any expeerience with this.
I would think if it were true the hatcheries would be much better be able get just pullets.
So, we go to the feed store this morning and they still have some chicks! Ohhhhh they have EEs. Just look at those fuzzy cheeks ohhh. No, no, no we only have Bantams so we're not going to get big ones. But boy did I want to!!!
So my neighbor thought Bob our local Guinea was lonely and brought home two chicks a few days ago. I agreed to raise them since I had all of the equipment having just finished raising my chicken chicks. So knowing nothing about raising Guineas I come to the masters (you all) to find out how...

I've been peeking about trying to identify my mix of bantam chicks and am wondering if anyone knows of a breed list that includes pics of the chicks as well?
Perhaps someone could put one together and they could add it to the home page. I personally would find that VERY helpful and a big...
We were given four bantams a few days ago and am looking to identify them.
Sorry I have no pics
They have a single full sized comb, red face including earlobes, down neck and top of back they are light cream/gold color the rest of them looks like a white bird who went out and rolled in the...
We'll be bringing our chicks home in a couple of weeks and as I was reading others posts I wondered...would it be OK if I put them in their coop?
The floor is about 4' by 5' and can be closed off from outside. We'll not be having any more frost nights by then.
How long will they need the heat...
We'll be replacing out flock next month. The local feed store is getting a shipment of straight run bantams does anyone have suggestions/photos of how perhaps we could TRY to get only one roo?
Ok, I was thinking that my big roo is a RIR. The hubby went to the local feed store today and checked our the new chicks and talked to the lady there. He says he is a Dark Brahma. Or perhaps we are both wrong.
We got him from a friend in July and of course thought he was a she. At the time...
I received these two "hens" about a month ago. At the time they were the same size as my bantams, they are just a little bit bigger now.
In that time Peaches has grown a comb and "her" tail feathers stand up quite nicely like my little bantam roosters' do.
The RIR cockerel I have goes after...
I've lurked around the forums a bit and finally decided that I needed to join.
I have some pics to post. I need someone more experienced than myself to share their knowledge with me about my chicks.
