How to make them SHUT UP!

My hens used to make noise. Not too much, just some. Now they are downright OBNOXIOUS! I am surrounded by neighbors and concerned that they will complain. Heck, I sure would!!!! One of the hens is the ring leader, she starts squawking and screaming at 6am!!! Then the others copy her. 4 of...

Anyone with Sussex experience, what do you think? Girl or Boy? 10 weeks. I looked for incoming saddle/hackles. I saw some feathers coming in, but they were not pointy at all. flat ends. Comb is pink at base with yellow tips. Not red at all. The one in the back Thanks!

hen is limping. chased by dog yesterday. no visible injury. UPDATE

I'm so worried about my girl!!!! She was chased by a dog yesterday and had a mouthful of feathers pulled out, but no cuts or anything. I put her in her coop and at first she seemed normal. But then I noticed her limping. She puts some weight on her foot but hops rather than walking normally. I...

Got home from the feed store and SHOCK they gave me medicated feed!

I never fed my 4 girls medicated feed at all when growing them up last year. Now I have 2 new chicks and went to buy feed, as I was completely out. The feed store guy was a different guy than I've always seen... Told him I needed a bag of chick starter crumbles, he said ok and rung me up...

When can I put my chicks out with the older hens?

Weather is warming, I've been raising the heat lamp a little each week. Yesterday I let the chicks play in the yard for a few hours. When can I put them in the coop with the hens? Edit: Theyre 4.5 weeks old

Speckled Sussex Chicks! Post your baby pics and tell what sex

I have 2 new chicks, speckled sussex. Purchased them as pullets, but I have a tendency to think i've gotten roos by mistake. (Thought this for 4 months about one of my hens who is laying now...) I just want to compare some baby photos with people to ease my mind. My chicks are about 1 week...

Baby chicks keep getting a little poo stuck to fuzz on their butts

We've been washing it off for fear of the dreaded "pasty butt" but is this necessary? Is it better to not get them wet? Why is this happening? I'm feeding them plain water and chick crumbles and chick grit. They're about 3 days old. My chicks last year did not have this issue. They were...

How long will it take for them to learn to go up or down the ramp?!!!

OK, so my husband built a FANTASTIC coop for our 4 hens this fall. But he never built them a ramp. So 2 weeks ago, give or take, i built a lovely ramp myself. My chickens are 20 weeks, and I had been taking them in and out of their coop by hand until they were 18 wks. Every day since, I...

I've noticed a big change in the Girl's combs and wattles... how long?

I know, patience is a virtue 2 o my chicken ladies have been sprouting some bright red combs and wattles over the past week or 2. One of them keeps digging a nest in our raised garden bed. she'll take a dust bath in it then just keep digging it rounder till it's like a nice cozy nest. Then...

Do some barred rocks lay blue eggs?

I was just noticing in the breeds index it showed a blue and a light brown egg in the barred rock info. I have never heard of this, and wanted to know if anyone had experienced this. Post pics if you have them.

How old are Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons when they start to lay?

I'm wondering when to expect to see some eggs from my girls. We have 2 buff orps and 2 barred rocks. They're 14.5 weeks, so I'm thinking sometime in 4-8 weeks? Or is that too optimistic? We do have a heat lamp in their coop.

Do hens of any breed have a green sheen to their feathers?

I have a chick (13 wks old) that was sold to me as a female barred rock, but Ive been suspicious about its sex for months and posted pics a few times asking for opinions. Responses were mixed/confused. Today I noticed a slight green sheen to the feathers on its back. Any chance of it being a...
