My Java has been listless the last 24 hours. I noticed when she didn't coming running for the scratch yesterday. Then I had to put her in the coop last night because she had hunkered down in the bushes. This morning she had moved into the run and then out to her favorite perch. she's really calm...
Oh great canning masters, I seek your wisdom and experience...
I make some kick ass dilled refrigerator carrots that are crunchy and tasty. Unfortunately, they only last about a month. So I tried my hand at some pressure canned carrots for their long shelf life. I called this batch "the carrots...
I only have four hens. Started with two in October and then adopted two just over a month ago. The EEs are roughly a year older than my other girls.
Of course there's been an adjustment period while everyone sorts out where they are in the pecking order. I was ready for it and tried my best to...
Last week I got two year old EE hens. I put them in a coop and run near my current girls because there was no place else. So they have been sharing the same air space and only divided by chicken wire. I know, I know, they should have been completely separated but I don't have a spot.
I suspect...
I was given two girls today that the owners said are Ameraucanas. They bought them at a feed store as chicks...One has a very distinct muff (beard?) and the other does not. Do EE's have these? They are sweet and beautiful and I'm happy to have them. Just curious about them...
Their legs are...
I have a mottled Java that I have posted about before questioning her 'alarm call' or 'egg song'... She is about 6 months old and hasn't laid an egg yet. Recently, she has started doing this very loud call in the morning...bock bock bock BAWK! bock bock bock BAWK! I thought it was an alarm call...

I stumbled across this story and thought for sure it was a hoax. A little google searching says it's real.
*shudder*
My Mottled Java started sounding the alarm this morning. It was a loud forced cluck-cluck that she repeated over and over.
We live in a very urban area and the sun was already up so there's few predators around...I shoved the dog outside to check things out while I got my shoes on and I could...
It had to be done sooner or later...I let the girls out of the coop today and they are in the yard. I know they will be fine. It's just a little nerve racking...
Merry Christmas girls. I know you're having fun.
I think it took less than a month for me to replace the tractor with a larger coop. The tractor was a good place to start but it was just too small. And heavy!
When this shipping crate came along I saw a great opportunity.
I'm using the deep litter method and it sure is nice. Way better than...
Well, I built my tractor and have two chickens... I am so delighted to finally have the girls BUT I can't stop thinking about the changes I need to make on the tractor. Seriously, I finished it yesterday and I had dreams all night about the structure and it's flaws.
The girls seem happy...
Hello everyone.
I've lurked around this website for a month or so gathering information on backyard chickens and finally signed up. The knowledge, resources and people on this site are amazing. I have learned so much from your experience. Thank you!
Why now: After 12 years in a live/work space...
