I am planning on buying fertile eggs and hatching out either 50 or 100 birds, strictly for butchering. My questions are, how big of a cage would I need to grow these birds to eating size, and how old is usually the best age to butcher?
My chickens started slacking off on laying about a month ago, and are now down to about nothing. I put a light in the coop on a timer about a week ago, and was wondering how long should it take for them to increase laying. I have the 40w light coming on at 3:30 am and it gets dark around 5:30...
Can't seem to find it at Tractor Supply or Southern States, and other suggestions? Also what does DE stand for I know it is something earth, but can't remember the first word, thanks.
I am clearing land for a pasture and have two questions.
1. Small saplings "thumb sized" do they need to be pulled up roots and all or could they just be cut off flush with the ground? I will disc the area after clearing, but wondered if the stumps left behind would damage hoofs, frogs, etc...
Here are a couple pics of some buffs we hatched out about four weeks ago. There are several that have the large comb like the one pictured. Is this a dead give away that they are roosters? I would hate to get rid of them if there would be a chance that they are hens.
We just hatched out some Buffs about a month ago, and several of them have significantly larger combs than the others. Is this a sure fire way to tell if they are roosters?
I had planned on brooding in the house, until I read a post on the dust. So, will the heat lamp keep them warm enough in an unheated outbuilding with lows in the teens at night?
First time hatcher, so if this is common knowlegde I apologize. Last night one pipped and then hatched today, but seems it is still attached to the shell with what looks to be a "cord", also there is a small amount of blood in the shell. Is this normal, do I need to do anything? Temp is 100.2...
I have seen a few threads were someone has said they use a computer cooling fan to circulate air in their incubator. I am thinking of seeing if the local computer repair shop has any, then the question hit me. How do you properly wire the fan to the incubator? I have a LG and Hova Bator...
I am planning on framing my run with treated 2X4's, then attaching to wire to that. But before I start building I was wondering if anyone has used other framing materials with any luck, i.e.: pvc pipe, conduit, etc. Pictures would be very helpful too.
Not really the gambling type, so shipped eggs make me nervous. Is anybody on here from Southern WV, with hatching eggs for sale? If so what do you have and what do you want for em'?
My little girl who is two has been "helping me" with my eggs in the incubator. She wants to be right by my side every time I turn them, and hates to leave when we are done. Today I was told when it was her turn to request prayers in sunday school, she wanted to pray for daddy's baby birds.
