I've raise three groups of meat birds so far. The first were Cornish crosses that I fed 12 hours a day. I let them live with the laying hens. They grew fast, I lost about 10% and they were kind stink and dirty, but otherwise I was satisfied. They would have been 6-7 lbs at 10 weeks but my...
I've been doing the same old Thanksgiving recipes for a long time. Turkey, stuffing with chestnuts, mashed potatos, sweet potatos (sticky sweet like my husband likes it) and cranberry sauce.
Please share any of your favorite recipes! I'm looking for inspiration!
I know I have a mom raccon and some babies living under my deck. Beyond the backyard, my chickens live in my barn area. They are well locked up at night but I like to let them free range during the day.
Can a raccoon hunt down and kill an adult chicken? Should I be keeping them in full time...
I am SOOOOO mad. They got my 9 meaties (two weeks away from being processed), 3 layers, and some bantams. These dogs have been loose before and slip through the fence. The nieghbor's been warned and they don't do anything. They are so irresponsible. The worst is that two meaties weren't...
I've read here and there about hatcheries keeping their breeding cornish X's on strict diets etc. And then I thought, isn't the Cornish X a cross between two "normal" breeds?
I'm actually against AI for birds, and against raising breeds that can't sustain themselves on their own (i.e. freak...
I know you should rest your chicken a few days after processing, but can I butcher it into pieces (breast, legs, etc) frist or do I have to wait past the resting time for that? Not sure how much room I have in the fridge, and I've got 10 birds to process!
Processing my first bird today. What do you all do with the blood and feathers? Can I compost the blood? Or should I just rinse it into the ground? My dad mentioned something about adding salt and letting it congeal to eat, but I think I'll pass on that.
I just noticed one of my cornish corsses (6 weeks old) can't seem to stand anymore. It can kinda get up and move a few steps, but can't stay upright. Is it time to cull? I suppose this could be my practice bird. Is there such a thing as too young or too small to eat?
Shoudl I feed my meat birds in the last day before processing? I know of some species you pull up the food.
Also, I've never processed before and I'm getting a little wigged out. How long do you put them in the boiling water for?
What's a boning knife for? Can't I just use a good meat...
I got 12 cornish crosses and 5 BR's from Ideal last week. They were a week old yesterday. This morning I found one cornish cross dead. No obvious signs of trauma. Does this just happen sometimes? I've never had such little chicks before.
I have 25 chicks coming soon. I have a 10'x12' barn stall I was planning on putting them in. But is it too big??? Will they be able to find the heat lamp and food etc? Should I try to confine them in part of the stall?
Can I mix bantam, standards and cornish cross chicks?
Can I raise them together? I have tons of room and plan on free ranging them during the day when they are big enough.
I'm just getting my first set of day old chcik from Ideal in a month or so. I'm getting 5 Barred Rock pullets, 12 cornish crosses and 8 bantams, so 25 total. How big a brooder do I need? Also, is it okay to mix the bantams and standard size chicks? Can they all be raised together?
I found this in the mud near where my chickens were killed. I think it's a coyote but could be a dog? I don't think it's a raccoon. What do you all think?
A few nights (well could have been early morning or late evening too) ago, something got 2 of my four free range chickens. I found feathers, two legs and a bunny head. Nothing else from those two.
I started locking my remaining two in at night. Today, sometime between 10:30 and 4, whatever...
I thought my chickens were pecking my eggs for the longest time and then I figured out it was the wild birds. Any ideas how to stop them? The nests are in a horse stall open to the outside and I don't want my chickens in the barn. I tried covering the nests but the eggs still get pecked. I...
I'd really like to raise some meat birds this year but I'd like to find a place to process them since I'm not sure I can handle it and I know I won't be getting any help from my husband. Does anyone know a processing facility in the SF Bay area or Sacramento area? I'm in San Jose. Thanks.
I have 4 hens, and one that is two years old and part of the original family here has started to roost alone. She goes up in the hay by herself. The last two nights I've put her on the roost with the others as it's been very cold. I think she stays there alright. Any ideas why she would...
I have a 1 1/2 year old BR hen. She is molting for the first time. I noticed today that her comb is also not as red as it should be, a bit dusty colored red. Is this a normal part of the molt? Or is the comb a sign of some other problem? She seems fine otherwise.
