I have a broody hen who needs chicks ASAP! She has been sitting for 3.5 weeks, and her eggs show no signs of hatching, poor girl. Looking for large fowl only. Thanks!

broiler feed - looking for a brand I can't recall the name of!

About a year ago I purchased a bag of poultry feed that was monochromatic with drawings of a duckling, a chick, and maybe a baby turkey or goose on it, and I've not been able to find it again. Does this description sound familiar to anyone? It was non medicated and for a mixed flock of young birds.

    barred rock chick?

Hi all, Is this a barred rock chick: https://www.backyardchickens.com/image/id/7347651/width/400/flags/LL I bought hatching eggs, and was supposed to have six buff orpingtons and one white cochin. Instead out popped five buff orpingtons, one white cochin, and this nugget. Thanks!

Broody hen in February (in Michigan!)

I've been reading through some older posts on broody hens in the winter, but I'm wondering if anyone has any input on my specific situation. I have an orpington hen who has successfully raised two previous batches of chicks for me (good mama!) and she has started hoarding eggs and pecking at...

3 month old orpington/cochin mutts - all cockerels?!

I've suspected for some time that all 5 of my chicks are cockerels. I would love to have your expert opinions! Chick #1 I'm almost positive that this one is a boy. I also think it's the evil spawn of my mean, old, cranky barred rock hen! Chick #2 Chicks #3 and #4 Another shot of...

open wound from dog attack - how do I help?

My dog managed to get his mouth around a hen today. He mostly got feathers, but tore a piece of skin from her back. It is still attached, like a flap. She is bleeding, but not scarily fast. I have isolated her in my bathroom (she's hiding behind the toilet at the moment). How should I clean...

chicken saddle failure - advice needed

Well I spent much of this morning sewing a chicken saddle out of an old flannel shirt for my smallest hen, who has lost a lot of feathers from my rooster. (Many thanks to those who have discussed how to make saddles on this forum by the way! It's been very helpful) I just went out and put it on...

    Book recommendations?

This forum has been a great resource for me and my first year with chickens, but does anyone have recommendations for good books about raising chickens? I'm mostly looking for one that includes diagnoses of common chicken ailments.

    Was it aggressive behavior?

I was just out with the chickens, crouched down and feeding raisins to the girls when my rooster (one year old orpington) puffed up and did a little sideways dance at me. I decided to chase him around for a while, just in case he was trying to show me he's the boss. Was he? He's never been...

hen with tucked tail won't come out of coop

I have a 2 year old orpington hen who is acting strangely this morning. Her tail is pointed down and she wouldn't come out of the coop all morning even though it's the first day in a long time that the run hasn't been covered in snow. I did finally get her to come out by enticing her with some...

infected frostbite - what should I be watching for?

My rooster has a significant amount of frostbite on his comb and wattles. From what I've read on this forum, there isn't much I can do about it other than watch to make sure it doesn't get infected, applying neosporin if it does. What are the signs of infection? I put some bag balm on him just...

transitioning a bird from heatlamp to no heatlamp

My aunt wants me to take a hen of hers (plymouth rock I believe, about 3 years old) because her other hen died, and this one's all alone now. But she's had the hen in a coop with a heat lamp, which I don't have. I'm in Michigan, and it's been single digits lately, so I'm not planning on bringing...

    There are no stupid questions...

Except this one: Do hens ever um... jump on top of one another to show dominance? Quite like a rooster would do? I'm in denial about my hen really being a rooster.
