    Determing Roo fertility

Do roosters lose fertility over the winter? Kind of like how hens slow or stop egg production? I have a super sweet roo who might be 3 y.o. and I just candles some eggs at 7 days. They're all clear. I really wanted chicks from him. Should I give him a couple more weeks? Or is it soon...

    Rooster limping....PLEASE HELP!!!

My rooster, Chuck, started limping just over two weeks ago. One foot was swollen nearly twice the size of the other. But there was no sore or kernel like with bumblefoot. The little toe was crusty, but after scrubbing it looked okay. I soaked it daily in Epsom salts and have him Tylan 50...

    Pullet trying to vomit?

I have one pullet who is fluffing up and heaving like she's trying to bring something up. Her crop isn't full and she's too young to be laying - about 2 mos old now. She's eating, so I'm at a loss. Any ideas on what I can do to help her?

    When to process?

I have three Bronze turkeys that will be 32 weeks old by Thanksgiving. I plan on putting the tom on the table. How many days in advance should I process him? I read chickens usually need 24-48 hours to rest before cooking or freezing, but is it the same even for a much larger bird?

    Rooster gone...hens depressed?

I processed our rooster two weekends ago. It was not our original intent to have a rooster, but our 'mystery chick' turned out to be a boy. Despite all my hens being large fowl breeds and our rooster being a significantly smaller Hamburg, he was putting a lot of wear and tear on the ladies...

    Is this molting?

I have one Australorp hen that my rooster favors. (He favors all the Australorps, but this one in particular.) She has been missing the feathers on the back of her neck and base of tail for months from all the attention. Tonight while digging around for worms with them, I saw that her...

How to know an unpipped chick is dead?

I'm in my second hatch and it's not going as well as my first despite the first set being shipped. I had 3 pips in the incubator, two made it and one didn't. Also had two hatch under the broody, but just found one pushed to the side and obviously dead. I know that these two were dead because...

    Pullet or cockerel

8 week old Cuckoo Marans/Silver Spangled Hamburg. I think roo, my mom says hen, and my BF is really hoping for hen so it can stay in the house.

    Can I use the broodies?

I have one proven broody Minorca who sat for 5 weeks (2 without eggs, 3 with) and hatched a clutch back in early April. We took her chick away after 5 weeks. She became broody again about a week ago with another Minorca. By then I had hatched 8 chicks in an incubator and they will be 3 weeks...

    Gender guesses?

This is my 5 week old Cuckoo Marans/SSH chick. It was the only chick to survive my first broody hatch and integrating it into the flock has been impossible. It's currently the house chicken until it's big enough to command some respect or will get fitted for a chicken diaper - if it's a hen...

    Yolk sack or more?

Is this normal for a new chick? This is my first time incubating and the first chick was already hatched by the time I got home for lunch - sometime between 9 and 12:30. It didn't have anything hanging off of it. The chick in the picture hatched between 1:30 and 4. It was dragging that mass...

    Dry Incubation question...

I set 14 chicken eggs in a Genesis incubator Saturday afternoon. It had been maintaining a steady 55% humidity & 99.5 degrees prior to eggs. After adding eggs it stablized at 47% & 99.4 according to the onboard digital read out. I put another thermometer/hygrometer in there when I added the...

    Is this survivable? *WARNING: Graphic*

I already lost one chick today that had an umbilical hernia at lunch. I come home from work and find one of the remaining two chicks under the coop stairs. I have no idea what happened to this chick, but it looks like something tried to eat it. I took him in, cleaned out the dirt and...

    Deformed chick?!

What is wrong and what do I do? This chick hatched two days after last chick. It's still alive but very floppy. Looks like the broody broke it and another eggs. Other egg was empty - I guess. Is thus where yolk absorbs in?

Lethargic Minorca hen, comb & skin purple!

Yesterday evening she was in the nest box after dark. When I retrieved the eggs from under her there were none broken, but her belly and the box were moist with clear fluid (watery, not like fresh egg white). I left her alone, unsure what was wrong. This morning she was standing by the feeder...

    Yolk only?

Could a hen lay just a yolk? I found a dribble of yolk down the side of the nest box and one white chicken is completely covered with it on her back. No trace of shell or egg white to be found just a little moist yolk in the nest box shavings.

    Sporadic Wry Neck?

I have one hen, a Black Australorp, that previously had wry neck. (Head woukd twist upside down, walk backwards, etc.). After a few days of treatment with Poly-Vi-Sol and Vit E capsules, it was less pronounced and I returned her to the coop. Couple days later I couldn't distinguish her from...

19 1/2 weeks and STILL not roosting?!

I figured once we were knocking on 20 weeks door I'd be in egg count down mode. I'm still in roosting count down mode. Around 15 weeks my lone roo, a SSH, started roosting. A week later he was joined by an EE, then the next week by another EE and an Australorp. Then no new comers to the...
