used bricks as a floor for ground level coop

Just wondering if anyone has ever done this. I have a large supply of used bricks, and rather than pouring a concrete floor, which I am not going to do, I thought maybe I would build the coop (or rather 8 x 8 shed), then lay a layer of used bricks on the floor. The roost, nest boxes, etc. would...

BOSS was rejected and now sprouting

Ok...I am a new chicken owner. I bought 10 baby chicks on March 18 and have been devouring this site, gleaning chicken-owner knowledge and applying it to my small flock. I had to buy a bag of chicken feed at the local farm store and saw the black oil sunflower seeds in a nice bag. I had read...

    Am I Lucy or Luke?

Again, I'm new at this, so need some expert opinions. I bought 10 day old chicks at Rural King, and am not sure what I have in this one. Thanks very much.

Is dry dog food very bad for chickens?

My ten 12 wk. old pullets free-range around our farm, but don't really go out too far from the house and their little home. We have two big dogs that also call this farm home, and I keep the dog food barrell out, with a big pan next to it. The chickens have discovered the dog food and peck...

Will my chickens tear up my strawberry patch?

Now that I've picked all the strawberries I want for my own use, is it safe to turn my 10 girls loose in the patch? I don't want them to eat the plants themselves, but they are welcome to any berries that are left, and the bugs that are hiding down in the bottom. I put up a temporary chicken...

My 8 week old RIR sounds like a duck. Might it be a roo?

This is my first year for chickens and I have ten 8 weeks old birds. They all sound like what I would guess hens to sound like, gentle sounds and the occasional louder cluck or squawk, but one of my Rhode Island Reds sounds like a duck. Might this mean she isn't really Lucy, but perhaps Lester...

Run top for keeping out just hawks or other predators, as well??

I was just wondering if I even needed to put a top on my run, which hasn't been built yet. There will be safety under the coop as well as under an apple tree which will overhang the run. If the top of the run is to only keep out hawks, then I'd think I'm safe with not covering it. I do live in a...
