My daughter showed her chickens this weekend at the fair (4H). They were all in pretty rough shape due to molting, but she still ended up with Reserve Grand Champion in Beginner Showmanship! Her rooster got 4th in the crowing contest and 3rd in his class. Her 1 dozen colored eggs got 3rd in...
I have a friend with a 3 month old phoenix rooster who suddenly can't walk. He can flap his wings, move his toes, but has no grip, and cannot stand up at all. He eats and drinks and is alert, but just lays there not moving.
They've quarantined him from the flock, but aren't sure he's gonna...
Ok this is probably a really stupid questions, but is there a way to "trigger" broodiness in a hen? My girls are a year old and only 1 of the RIR girls has shown any sign of broodiness. She'll sit on the nest and get all fussy with me when I take the eggs, but even when I leave the eggs there...
My blue andulusian Cherry flew the coop a couple days ago. Somehow the flock escaped and she never returned with the rest. I've searched high and low but I assume the coyotes got her. :(
So I just outfitted my girls with pinless peepers because they've been plucking each other all winter. Alls well so far, but do I need to do any special feeding arrangements while they have their peepers on? Or can they eat out of the feeder ok? Also is it ok to let them out to free range with...
I ordered peepers for my flock and tried putting them on. I couldnt do it. It seemed to hurt the one hen I tried. Doesnt it seem cruel to shove a post thru their nostrils? Perhaps im doing it wrong. Any thoughts?
This was the scene in my backyard on Friday. A parade of 24 wild turkeys headed straight for the chicken run. My flock was locked up though so the only interactions were thru the fence. But it sounded like chaos out there. Chickens clucking like crazy and turkeys gobbling. Kind of hilarious...
Its bleeping cold right now and my flock is NOT happy. They should be thankful I kept them locked up today in the heated coop. But how do they thank me? Two measely eggs ;)
Ungrateful buggers! Lol
It was so gorgeous out yesterday. The flock was very happy with the weather. We moved a large pile of lumber and there were many bugs to be found. There was also much dust bathing taking place.

It was exceptionally warm today in Montana (60° in Dec!!!), so we were out cleaning up the yard. We have a 12ft flatbottom jon boat turned upside down in the backyard. I picked it up to move it and found a nice little clutch of ten eggs under it. Lord knows how long theyve been there. I had been...
My hens are starting to look pretty scraggly. Their rump feathers are broken off, along with their neck feathers. Its not molting. Is it possible my two roos are getting too rough? Or are they pecking at each other? They look terrible.
Ok ive read about all the reasons a hen would stop laying. Ive got supplemental lighting in the coop, she doesnt act sick,or look like shes molting, yet my EE hasnt laid in a month. And shes not stashing them anywhere either. Is it possible she will go all winter without laying?
