Question about bringing new chickens to flock... does it ever go well?

I have three 1-year old layers and three 2 month old pullets. I let them get to know each other through the chicken wire this weekend and today let them meet in person while free-ranging around the yard. Everyone seems fine about everyone else. The leader of the older three and the leader of the...

Professional drummers ... even though they're only 8 week old pullets!

I'm going to have to get this on video somehow... but I have 3 pullets in their enclosure in the garage right now and they have knocked their food thing off the upside down metal container it's resting on (to make it taller) and they are pecking at the metal and it sounds JUST LIKE DRUMMING...

Some eggs coming out with weird tiny calcium-like beads stuck on shell

Does anyone know if I should be concerned about one of my hens laying eggs with this weird crust of tiny, calcium looking bead thingys on the outside of the shell. If you rub at them they come off. So far only two eggs like that... very weird. Thanks!

Video of 5-8 day old babies peeping and pooping in the living room!

What's more fun than watching baby chicks? Watching them poop in someone else's living room, a place you don't have to clean up! We shot this short video this morning after they'd had lots of breakfast and time under the heat lamp. SO CUTE! So poopy...

    Is this a pullet?

I didn't know Barred Rocks could be sexed by color & other traits before I got this little fuzzy yesterday. She was the last BR they had - hopefully that doesn't mean that everyone else took one look at her and said "ROO!". Also... I have believed my wonderful Gloria to be an EE... but...

Suddenly wondering if chickens eat and drink at night???

A couple days ago I moved the hanging food/water containers to the chickens outdoor run (from inside the coop) because a rodent was chewing through the walls & doors of the coop to get to the food. It was driving me crazy and I was sick of repairing the coop. Now, by reading all the various...

Help me identify my three fuzzybutts for 2009! I'm SO EXCITED!

I decided to get three more (I know, I know! They're ADDICTIVE!). I have three wonderful girls from last year's brooder... and three more should round out the back yard nicely... right? Well... I wanted Polish or Spitzhaubens... but I have a girl who likes to eat the other's feathers so I...

Never mind.... I did more research...

I really want some Polish, but I also really love my Araucana who happens to eat the feathers of her coop mates... so Polish aren't a good choice. I guess I could put pinless peepers on her, but I'd rather just figure out something else. Thanks!

Need help! Rump/back feathers being plucked or bitten off...

This is probably answered somewhere else, but I sure can't find it... I have three hens and two of them are missing some feathers on their back, near their tail... they look like someone chewed them off... I have to assume it's Gloria - the bully easter-egger. Why is this happening? What should...

    Need advice about foot injury...

My 5 1/2 week old Buff Orpington has a scratch/cut on his foot. I haven't had a chance to read up on injuries and treatments for my new chickens. Do I need to do anything? I'm concerned that it will get infected. I think he/she (I'm still wondering about sex) must have scratched it on a bush...

    Is this a pullet?

I'm new to keeping chickens. I had no idea how much I would LOVE them. However, we got our first two because they were "left overs" at the feed store and at 2 weeks old they weren't very cute anymore. Now I'm worried our Buff Orpington is a roo. Which will make us sad because we can't keep roos...
