Here in West Tennesse, temps are running from 50 down to the teens. Our hens are laying fertile eggs during the day, allowing them to cool to whatever the current day's temp. Are these eggs ok to hatch or, because they were "refridgerated" no viable to incubate?
I started my chicks much earlier this year to help prevent loss to attacking ravens but a interesting question popped up. At what age should grit be made available for young birds?
Considering getting a half dozens Call ducks next spring and need to know if they have any special needs. Do they need individual nests or will a community house work? The geese and ducks we currently have just plop down anywhere they wish and sleep, are Calls the same way? I have a raven...
I just ran across a site that offers ducklings for sale that have Pinioned Wings (Permanently Rendered Flightless). Is this also a option for pheasants? I have 2 pens that are fenced 6' but are too big to net. Would they stay in if pinioned?
We know they are Polish and abot 6 weeks old...but can't tell what they wil be whn they grow up...Have not seen an all balck polish. top knot appears to be black and grey..any ideas?
I bought a couple containers of meal worms as treats for my wife's new chicks. They went nuts over them! I've heard people mention raising them for their birds but I want some info as to what's involved. Thanks
Feedstore had these Polish chicks and per shiiping records, they are almost 3 weeks old. Can anyone tell us anymore about them? Sex? Adult coloration? Will they be frizzy? Temperment?
Here we get clouds of bugs , yea I know, it feeds the millions of ducks and geese here but they're a big issue to people and critters. Just recently I heard two of them talking abd one ask if they should eat me here or take me back to the nest. The other one answered "we need to eat him...
The bald eagle from a slough about a mile away way is circling the yard, hope he decides to move on. Mongo, the rooster alarmed and ran the hens under a trailer and the turkeys are freaked out and are hiding in a brush pile and the wife's goose in under a truck but we will...
It happened again. Friend called and was hit by a stray dog today (lucky no dead birds as it could not fit thru the chicken door)
His run is dog kennel panels but we saw that not every end of the wire was secured to the pipe frame. The dog pushed thru the gap between the cheezy factory...

Was fixing a loose piece of fencing, so I wrapped a strand of wire around the post and the loose piece, twisted it secure, clipped off the excess but didn't knock it flat.
Went on about my inspection and just happened to look back in time to see a young turkey peck the end of the twist. Must...
If you have a critter proof fence and are having problems with dogs or fox trying to dig under, why would you dig in the skirt? It doesn't make sense to loosen the dirt for them by digging the wire....... seems you're just loosening the packed ground for them. Why would you go to all that...
When I built, I was going to have a feed room but opted for a built in lidded bin to set the feed sacks into. I don't see people planning a secure critter proof storage beside a occational galvinized trashcan.
My 6 week old BBB are getting strange. Several times we've witnesses 2 birds trying to fluff up and strut but they are bumping breasts and trying to wrap their neck around the other's. It's like they are trying to intimidate each other or trying to pick a fight. What's up?
