We have a healthy & beautiful Roo. He has always respected my hubby (will attack the rest of us though, LOL) but never him. I just manage it & shoo him away with a stick or broom.
I tried the whole taming him thing and chased him down for weeks and held him, but that got exausting and didn't...
This is an UPDATE on Princess.
I posted 2 weeks ago thinking that she was eggbound.
She just sat in the yard, poor & pitful & won't get up for anything, not walking more than a few steps a day.
We pick her up each evening and make sure that she gets in the house.
We did eveything possible for...
Thanks, I will take whatever advice you might have to share.
Yes, I saw the pic of your lady & she looks so uncomfortable. Poor thing.
Our "Princess" is now in the garage on bed rest. She has been there most of the day & loving the attention, but the cat's not too crazy about sharing his room...
I posted yesterday about egg bound, and have been doing a lot of reading on these threads about it, but I still don't know which one my lady is suffering with. All the symptoms I am reading could be the same.
here is what is happening....
1. She can & will drink fine. (I have started adding ACV...
I have a Partridge Rock, a little over 1 year.
Totally free range, been laying fine until...
One of my ladies named Princess is acting strange.
She was in the house about 3 days ago & seemed to be panting & pacing back & forth, kept opening her mouth & sticking out her tounge. She was in there...

UPDATE:
We got an egg from her this morning!! (it's 58 degrees here) maybe the warm weather is helping.
I guess just posting helped, maybe she heard I was talking about her and felt loved. Whew! @ least this means that she isn't bound.
The egg was funny shaped, and it's the first one...

If I looked @ the vent area, would these little mites or lice be big enough to see?
It started on her head (she looks bald) the quills are there, but the soft feathers are gone and when you brush her her feathers come out in small handfuls, feathers flying.
How do I increase her...
Ok, so it's winter (in TN), some days are still 58 (with rain) and other days have gotten as low as 26.
I have a Pearl White Leghorn that has been a really faithful layer (I know because she is my ONLY white egg girl)
Was born Easter last year and started laying a month before any of the other...

So you do think that this is a pox?
That is a viral infection, right?
Anything I can do to get rid of it? It's not so bad yet, but I can see that they all have it.
Did I do something wrong to cause or let this happen?
Are the eggs safe?
No it's not as wart like as that link above shows, it's more like little dirt specks.
Maybe they just need a bath!
Serioulsy when I call the county agent in town he never seems to know anything!
Our vet doesn't do poultry so I am just trying to solve myself.
I never see them fight or pick at each other.
On one of the girls it looks like a solid black line just along the tip of her comb.
The other girls are just some small little dots scattered all over the combs.
Everyone seems healthy and happy. Laying is fine.
Just don't know if this is...
Hi!
Keeping in mind that I am new to chickens...
I noticed this morning that my ladies (& roo) have some little black dots on their red combs.
We live in TN so it's cold, but daytime has been 70ish and night times about 40ish. We have only had 2 frosts so far where it was at or right below 32...
Ok so I have a variety of ladies....
2 Rhode Island Reds
2 White Orpington
1 Buff Orpington
1 White leghorn
2 Partridge rocks
1 Lt. Brahma
Now I have a SC single comb leghorn Roo.
(not matching any of these breeds)
What would happen.....is it possible..... can I let her......
get broody and...
I have 9 ladies in a large area.
My friends says that the ONLY thing she feeds her chicks are scratch, but I am wondering if that is not Ok after reading the treats list?
I bought the layer pellets, but they HATE it!
Usually they stay on the ground making yellow jackets food instead.
So I...
Ok, i have 9 ladies and all were born last Easter.
They are all doing fine, all raised the same way and all eat the same things. They have a HUGE area to graze on with plenty of grass, rocks. etc... I also give them plenty of oyster shell to choose from, in addition to al their shells crushed...
Keep in mind that I am totally new to this, but having luck with this so far....
I would keep them up longer in the morning only.
I guess they would lay early? Then let them out a little later each day. I would be afriad that it you keep them locked up all day they might get scared because...
Well I didn't go from 1 to 50, but I did try to use a tractor all around the yard and then move them into a larger lot during the day. (locked up at night)
We did this little dance for a month & they got very use to it.
Now we decided to build a larger movable tractor/coop in a larger fenced...
Keep in mind that I am new and this is my first batch.....
I agree, mine seem to come with soft tones and just being around a lot.
They are only 6 weeks old and I sit with them during meals when it's a pretty day outside.
Right now I am just so taken with them I want to be outside all the time...
