    Breathing difficulties

Anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing breathing difficulties in an otherwise healthy 3 year old sussex bantam hen? She was normal until yesterday when I noticed her breathing was noisy and labored. Yesterday it seemed like putting her head down to eat was uncomfortable so she...

Mixing bantams with standard size hens

i have 4 Banrevelder bantams (1 is a rooster) and 2 light sussex bantam hens. I'm thinking of getting some more hens but would like to get some standard sized ones for bigger eggs. Can I keep all the birds together in one run (it's about 8 ft x 25 ft). I'm assuming that there will be a bit of...

    Rooster keeps head down

HELP!!! Yesterday I noticed my 3 1/2 yr. old rooster standing on a log in a sheltered sun spot with his head drooping down below his legs and I thought sleeping. I thought it was just a bit of R&R while he let the other rooster keep an eye on the flock. But today I noticed that he is...

How many is too many roos?

I have a flock of 13 - 3 are roosters (2 of them are 6 month old siblings - the other is their "dad"). Is it possible to have too many roos in with the hens? I've already had to remove 2 of the older hens as they seemed to be getting too much attention from the roosters and were loosing a bit...

    Muddy run

Our hens are in a run that is mostly soil with a little area of rocks. Coming into the wet winter months here I'm realising how messy this will be not only for me going in and out to feed, water & chill out with them but also for their little feet! What is a good type of ground cover for a run...

    slugs!

Our run borders a field and we have a few areas in the run which is a good daytime home for slugs. At night the run is invaded with slugs. I can't leave any hen feed out over night as the slugs devour it and leave their slime all over the dishes. I put out containers of beer to catch the...

    husbandry

Are there any issues I need to be aware of in regards to keeping a "brother" cockerel with it's "sister" or "dad" with his "daughters"? I'm concerned that if we try to breed more chicks, we could end up with genetic problems if we breed them incorrectly.

    new to forum

Hi from Northern Ireland. I have Barnevelder Bantams - 1 adult cockerel, 2 adult hens, and 4 nine week old chicks - 2 cockerels & 2 hens. Loved watching the process recently of getting one of our hens to hatch her eggs and then raise the chicks. I realise that I have so much to learn!!!

    avian pox

There is a threat of avian pox hitting garden birds in the UK. I live in Northern Ireland and have bantam hens in the garden. Are they at risk of catching this disease? Is there anything I can do to prevent my poultry catching it?

    Keeping 2 cockerels together

I have 4 chicks - 2 cockerels & 2 hens - that are 9 weeks old. When I eventually add the hens into the main flock, can I keep the 2 cockerels together in a separate chicken coop/run or will they fight? The cockerels would be kept in a coop in the front yard and the rest of the flock are in...

    Separating mom hen from chicks

I have 4 nine week old Barnevelder Bantam chicks (2 cockerels, 2 hens) and 3 adults (1 cockerel, 2 hens- 1 of which is "mom" hen) we hatched the chicks ourselves (well our hen did ). I'm at the point of separating the mother from the chicks and reintegrating her back in with the other adults...
