    Change in layer feed...

Thanks everyone! I put the food out for them last night, mixing 50/50 (old&new). It's raining like crazy today so I doubt much food will be consumed. There's more important things like getting wet and hunting worms! Happy New Years everyone Linda

    Change in layer feed...

Our local feed store is out of our normal 16% layer crumble, they sold me a new brand that's made locally (pretty cool in my opinion!) but it's 19% . Is that too high? Will it throw off my hens diet? I tried searching but kept getting an error msg. Thanks for any help!

Do chickens change eating behaviors w/ change of seasons?

I see alot of post asking why chickens stop eating their food and I've never run into the problem until now. Could it be weather related? My issue is I have seven girls all but one is laying. All are on organic layer pellets and have been for some time, no sudden brand changes. I've noticed...

    Are Hens to loud?

Quote: We bought a new coop last week that has four solid walls, the one they have now has only hardware cloth. I'm hoping this will block the noise.

    Are Hens to loud?

My chickens are so loud first thing in the morning. It's like their way of bullying me into letting them out of the coop, and if not they will make sure every one of our neighbors wakes up on the wrong side of the bed. All seven of them cackle and bock the second the sun comes up and it's not...

how about selling araucanas as EEs?

I have three araucanas that a breeder had to cull. Beware though, I was really excited that they would only lay blue eggs (my daughters love blue eggs) because they all have slate black legs. I figured no green legs, no green eggs. Only one lays blue eggs and they are super small eggs the other...

How to deworm the safe way??

I have searched the forums and am still a little confused about de worming. Is there a product I can deworm with that is safe for chickens (meaning I can eat their eggs and them with peace of mind) I tried raw pumpkin seeds with buttermilk. My chickens seem to be above such a meal. The thing...

Quote: Just to throw it out there (I'm not trying to correct you ) I recently purchased some birds from an Ameraucana breeder, he told me they were not show quality. They all have slate black legs, Two of them lay green and one lays tiny blue eggs! EE can have slate/black legs, it totally...

    Coop add on w/questions

Quote: Yeah it's in Vanc. We offered more $$$ if they were willing to deliver. We'll see this afternoon when it gets here. I personally would like to build the two coops side by side with an entrance into the larger of the two and use it as a run in the winter. I currently have 7 chickens (5...

    Coop add on w/questions

Hi all We are buying a chicken coop off of craigs list tonight pending its delivery. We built a coop a few months prior and just were not thinking of winter arrangements. With the price of plywood and the time (that my husband does not have) it would take to board up the coop it just seems...

    Great news to share!

This post is a follow up to my post here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=90971 Maisy worked her kinks out and is now laying one jumbo/large hard shelled blue egg a day in her nest box. I'll never figure out why it took her so long to lay a decent egg. I tried the...

    Layer acting Strange.......Advice Please

I agree, she sounds broody. I have a young RIR who went broody a month after she started laying. She's plucked out her chest feathers and camps out in her nesting box everyday to hatch her golf balls. I have to break her trance and take her out every morning. At first she was terribly upset...

I need to share my frustrations

Quote: I'm on the same page as you. She has until next Monday to sort out the kinks. She's in the nesting box right now so we'll see. I know she can lay a hard egg. But it has to be in the box, ya know. I made this post in hopes that maybe I was missing a step. I'd hate to sell her to the...

    Ameraucana with laying issues

I have an Ameraucana who is about 6-7 months. She just started laying, either she's just slow or something is wrong with her. Her first eggs were a week ago. She laid them in the middle of the night on top of the nesting boxes (roost connects to them) both eggs were shell less. I did all the...

    Mites & lice *fun times*

Ok, a little back story. I came home from vacation this weekend and did my routine monthly check on the girls. First I found lice eggs on the neck of one of my girls. So after the freak out subsided I bought some poultry dust and some spray for the coop. Well while I was putting the poultry...
