Have you tried a standard strainer like you would use for spaghetti? That may work...
I also find that the smaller screens used to keep predators out will work pretty well...all the feed drops to the floor and the shavings stay on top.

I think temps moving around that much could delay hatch time. I used a still air in the beginning now I only use forced air and wouldn't go back. Best investment I've made so far...good luck to you!
I will use a towel or robe draped over me to make it as dark as possible (even in the barn lol) so I can get a good luck at what's happening in the egg. I can't tell anything when trying to candle in daylight. Sometimes I go out way late at night to do it as well...
We've helped them out of the shells (if it's bleeding it's probably too soon) and had them survive and ones that survived for a few days and then die. Sorry to hear yours didn't make it.
