I am well aware that it's a silly question. We had a few runner ducks years ago that we kept in an old garden with a kiddie pool as their "pond".
Now I want to get a few ducks strickly to raise for food. I was going to keep them with my meat chickens but we don't have a pond or an area we can...
I have 35 chickens coming next month but I have an opportunity to get a few more however I'm undecided on the breed I want to add. I'm in love with the black austalorps, and the blue laced red wyndottes. I have a few different breeds currently and of course I love them too. Just wondering what...
It might not be the bator that's the issue. It's naturally much drier in the winter time and that can affect humidity. I had a really hard time keeping my bator at least 50% these last couple weeks and that was with the 3 troughs full.
I bought some eggs online from a BYC member. Put them in the bator and 28 days later I didn't get a single bird. This is my third time trying to hatch eggs. The first was quail (bought from ebay) and most of them hatched, the second I only had one baby chick hatch (bought from ebay) who died a...
I have 10 hens and 1 beautiful Roo. He's my buddy. He takes very good care of his girls and always comes over to see me or say hello when I'm outside. I went away for a few days and hubby was taking care of them. My hens also just started laying eggs the day before I left. I get back today and...
Thanks for the kind words! I feel bad for my one lonely chick hanging out in the brooder though. I did candle them at around 7 days and thought I saw veins and stuff in my wyndottes eggs. I couldn't see anything in the maran eggs because of the super dark shells. Who knows! I'll try again and...
So today is day 30 and nothing else hatched. I performed several egg-topsies this morning to see what went wrong. There was only one egg that had a fully formed, albeit small, chick inside. It was pretty liquidy under the membrane and the yolk sac was still present. As for the rest of the eggs...
I think I'll wait till day 30 and just dispose of them if nothing hatched. I opened up one of my maran eggs last night. The shell is so dark I couldn't candle them and I was curious. There was a full grown baby chicken inside with the yolk sac still attached. It was completely still. It gave me...
I don't have anything that measures humidity. This is my try incubating eggs. My BIL incubates quail and I just did what he told me basically. I keep the water chambers full was that not right? There is no water in them now. Should I see anything when candling? Meaning all I see is darkness...
Monday, my eggs would have been 21 days and ready to hatch. I had removed the turner and put them on lock down friday night before bed. Well it's almost 7 days later and only one egg has hatched. They were fertilized and when I candled them last week, most of them had grown chickens in them. So...
I "chicken sat" for a friend of our who went away over the long weekend and I noticed that a number of her hens were missing several feathers. One had a huge bald spot on her back, other had them missing around they're legs. I just found it odd and wondered if it was because she had so many in a...
Well not really but while I was out taking care of my birds for the night I caught one of my roosters having a jolly ole time with a hen. They're almost 3 months old but I thought it would be quite a while yet before they start laying. Are they just practicing? Should I get nest boxes into the...

I had to chuckle when I read your comment. I grew up the daughter of a Mechanic. My dad owned an auto repair shop with his brothers. Our cars were always the last to be repaired. My husband is an automotive designer by day, and he also owns a side business where he is a...
I don't think you can really over feed them. I had a few ducks years ago and we just left a huge feeder full of feed out there for them at all times. They were never "fat" birds. I do the same now with my chickens. I don't even limit my broilers like some people tend to do.
It's quite a way... probably between 500 and 1000 feet away Not good at judging distance. The only probably with running extensions cords out there is the fact that it would have to cross our drive way and my husband would end up plowing it up all winter long. Not to mention he's electrician...
Do they make a water heater that doesn't need to be plug in... like a battery powered one? We can't get electric to our coop. It's to far away from the house so I worry about them having water in winter. Not to mention I'm not sure what to do to keep them warm.
