Very cool. Thanks for the responses...my wife hates the thought but I love hearing the little guy trying to crow in the morning...

    What breed is this?

Yeah the question was regarding mating...hes so much smaller than the girls...thought I might have to put a step stool into the run.

    What breed is this?

Having had chickens for the past 8 years I have gotten my girls from a local gent who raises chickens. This year I bought 5 more as I lost some to old age. They were supposed to be mixed bantam chicks. 4 of the five are growing to be red sex links. This one in the picture is the only bantam...

A new flock with lessons learned

Well we have had chickens for years...a nice coop and run but let them roam the yard by day for years without any trouble. Despite the calm winter this year in a matter of two days hawks zeroed in and took out five chickens leaving only one huddled under the deck. I crawled in and finally got...

How long before they can freerange?

I have had 5 chickens for the past several years. I let them out of the coop and run everyday to run around the yard and as they should each night they come home to roost and I close them up. We just adopted 5 chickens from my sister. She gave us her coop and A frame run. One chicken is...

Egg Production has stopped for months!!

I am going through the same thing with my 6 chickens. They havent layed eggs for the past two months. Perhaps two eggs have been layed and both were broken when I went to the boxes. I thought it was caused by a new food brand but just yesterday my wife went up to let them out of the coop and...

911....I think shes either at the end or sick...ASAP

There are no vets in Connecticut, or at least my area that will deal with chickens. I have been giving her oyster shells. I will try the tums. Like I said shes eating and drinking...just not walking right at all.

911....I think shes either at the end or sick...ASAP

Still no improvement on her. I checked her all the way down and there does not seem to be an egg stuck anywhere. She is eating and drinking but not acting normal. She is squatting when walking and not roosting at night. Her eyes appear fine. She stumbles sometimes and doesnt appear to be...

911....I think shes either at the end or sick...ASAP

I have one of my older girls, one who was mature when we got the chickens (2+ years ago) and the last of the mature ones..., who has been acting wierd for almost a week. At first she was not moving, her eyes were half closed and was squatting all the time. Now, a few days later, she is...

    Finally let the girls out.

Only three hens are older. I also have seen a slow down in laying lately but think there should be at least one or two eggs more a day in the boxes. I will have to poke around the yard and keep an eye on them this weekend.

Grit needs and night time temps in coop

I agree with Akane. Last winter was very very cold here and the girls were fine in the coop at night. They perch and reffle up the feathers. Think back to colonial days, they had chickens but no electricity.

    Finally let the girls out.

I havent posted in a long while, since Milton had to be put down. We have had the girls for over two years now and have always kept them in the run. This past weekend I was helping a friend who also has chickens and has let them run since day one. I decided to let them out when I got home...

My Poultry Barn - Photo Heavy

Geez...makes my coop look like a dump. I better not let my chickens see your place...they might get online and by a plane ticket.

    Wire dog crates for chickens

Ive have an injured chicken rehabing in one of these crates for the past several months. I havent had a problem...yet. I would zip tie or hog ring tie some hardware cloth around it though to be on the safe side.

    Recycled Counter Coop.. :-)

Very nice. I planned on doing the same thing for my coop until I found someone giving away a huge dog house. I still have the two kitchen cabinets down in the basement.

    Tough decision...Updated!!

Hummm....I really do want a few silkies...a friend of mine has a bunch. It might be a good friend for my girl...Besides I love the way they look...looks like chickens wearing chaps.

Anyone decorate the coop for Christmas???

Ive had two sets of red chili lights for years which my wife forbid me to put up saying they were tacky. Today I was working around the girls house and thought they would be perfect, that is add the perfect tacky touch to the coop. They are hung and lit and look awsome. Anyone else decorate...

    Tough decision...Updated!!

Well its been a while so here is an update. Milton is doing MUCH MUCH better. She has all her feathers, for the first time ever since Ive gotten her. She has put on some weight and is pretty much acting like a normal chicken. Id love to put her back with the others but Im nervous. I might...

    Tough decision...Updated!!

Well its been about a week since I put Milton into her new "room." Things are pretty good now. Shes actually beginning to grow some feathers on her back, which is a first since Ive gotten her. Also, shes starting to act like a normal chicken...clucking and acting happy as opposed to scared to...

    Tough decision...Updated!!

I came home tonight and went up to cover the crate with a tarp and a padded picnic tablecloth. Since it was almost dark she was sleeping on the floor of the crate instead of in the box with the shavings. I kinda felt bad but know she will be warm enough for tonight. The crate has chicken wire...
