When I got home from work I found him in a laying box with a hen. I made up new cocci-water and fed him quite a bit of it. While holding him I noticed how thin he was. I could feel his breastbone. His crop was empty but not surprising because he probably didn't eat yesterday or today...
Right now he's in a coop and yard with 33 of his wives and kids. I hesitate to confine him by himself since he likes to roost next to his favorite wife but I can so as to get a "sample" poop picture.
And no, I haven't wormed him or any of the others. Do you think worms are causing his cold...
Everything I'm reading on past posts about cocci seems to be about chicks. Do only chicks get this?
I have a 3 year old rooster who is showing signs of cocci such as fluffed up feathers and lethargy. I did check him for mites and didn't see any. Also, his wattles have gone from red to and...
Definitely not the heat. Its only 72 here, cloudy and windy. She has no mites for sure. Don't know about worms yet. Can't tell what poop is hers! She "growls" when I pick her up and she pecks me.
What does and impacted crop feel like? I can feel something like a large marble that moves...
Thanks so much for the reply. Would Coccidiousis have discharge because she does not have any of that. There is NO new flock members. I'll check her crop again and check for mites, etc.
As you can see she is rather "puffy" and holding her wings down. She listlessly pecks at the grass but I really don't see her eating or drinking. She takes long breaths. She is about 3 months old. None of my other chickens appear to be sick. I checked her crop and if feels like a large...
My brother's young chickens did the same thing. He called me all disappointed. I said the chickens were new to the outside world and they would eventually come out. Well, they did. They roam all over his yard now.
I agree with Centrachid. Just open the door
When I was a new chicken owner I put some young roosters into my already established flock. One of these young roosters was attacked around his head very badly. All his feathers were gone from the top of his head. He was bleeding a lot. I got him (and the other one) out of there. Honestly...
That is a nice run "to be"!
I think they would like the dirt just how it is without the wood shavings. Maybe do half with shavings and leaving the rest for the chickens to scratch in a take dust baths. Also, I would put netting over the top or string narrow rope to keep out the flying...
I think I would just leave it alone and hope for the best. Can you hear peeping? What if it is trying to hatch and now it can't breathe because of the wax. Are you sure about the hatch date on this one?
Gheesh, it does look like its hatching. Is this egg under a broody hen? If so, maybe she pecked at the shell and broke it.
Maybe the egg is older than you thought?
I couldn't say if it would be alright with an open shell like that and 6 more days left to incubate if that is truly how much...
This happens all the time and never fails to make me laugh:
My polish thinks he is the best, most virile, handsomest rooster in the pen and is constantly stomping around and crowing. Well, I have another rooster in there with him and when Napoleon stands there belting out a "crow" the other...
I'm confused about free range chickens inside a fence
If your chickens are inside a fence with no netting over it, a hawk could of taken your chicken especially if there are trees around for the hawk to perch in and watch.
If your chickens are just walking around outside it could be a fox...
I used the walmart Acu-right also. You can calibrate this:
Get a coffee cup and put 1/2 cup of table salt in it
Add to the salt in the cup 1/4 cup of water
Put the cup and hygrometer into a plastic bag, a big one. Not a sandwich bag. Seal tightly.
Wait approximately 8-12 hours
The...
