Love it! Your garden area looks awesome. Thanks for the idea, I will give it a try. I was thinking chicken wire, but wasn't quite sure how to make it "openable". :) Thanks!
Does anyone have pictures of how they fence off the gardens? I'm particularly interested in vegetable gardens where I'll need to get in easily to tend them! I only have one chicken big enough right now to have some run out of the coop, but I have mainly a problem with stray cats eating my...
I have 3 baby silkies 8 1/2 Weeks old. How many toes should they have?
Yeah, that sounds silly. But my big chickens, a OEGB, 2 RIRs, and a BR all have 4 toes on each foot. My silkies have 4 toes on one foot, and 5 on the left.
Is that weird? Will they be ok as they grow? They seem to be fine...
Thanks guys! I know it must have sounded like a dumb question, but I've read about hard boiled eggs bring hard to peek so didn't want any surprises tomorrow!
Any recipes for cookies that will out do mom's cookies? I have one secret weapon (Andy's mints chips to user in chocolate chop cookies)...
This is my first year baking with fresh eggs versus super market eggs. Actually, I've never even cracked one yet! Dh made quiche from the eggs last week, so I know how yummy they are though!
Tomorrow, I'll be baking about abajillion cookies (well, enough top use about 18 eggs, if I don't go...

I'm 5 feet tall. I planned my coop to be 5 feet, but forgot that the wood hangs down about 4 inches and there's going to be 2 inches of sand in the bottom, oops indeed!
Read all the great information on BYC, but remember that chickens are all unique. Some don't like spaghetti and won't come running for scratch. Play around with the treats and find out what yours love! Also, their taste buds change over time. Oh, and mealworms are the best treat!
I got my silkies a couple of weeks ago, they were 6 a piece and so I got 3. I paid 3 a piece for hatchery RIRs, so I think 6 for silkies isn't bad, since they're so cute and fluffy and I really wanted them!
But not one was from any of my chickens.
I could almost cry it's so funny. I've been *dying* for my chickens to start laying eggs, and no luck so far. The one "of age" is 25 weeks old today. My neighbor came over this morning, though, and gave me 2 dozen eggs from her sister's...
Okay, so maybe it will work?? LOL! I guess I'm going to have to see.
Red Rooser and Mons02035, I didn't hear any arguing, just different sides to a point.
UrbanFarmerGreg, thanks for the viewpoint from someone who's tried it! Sounds like you're in an area like mine, so I may have to...

Thanks! I wasn't planning on keeping them outside full time, because of the predators and because I read they like to eat bugs, so we need them *inside* here, lol! A trailer in Florida means bugs get inside, no matter how hard you try. I was thinking I would take them outside, but...
*sigh* Okay, thanks! Maybe will have to look into treating the water somehow. Does anyone do this or know how? Would it cost a lot? We don't pay for water, so it seems kinda silly to pay for the water that comes free from the sky, lol! I don't want my chickie poo's to get sick though...
I saw an add on button quail on craigslist that got me interested in them, and DH and I have a few (or thousand) questions about them!
1. Are they really dirty? DH says that they poop more than they eat and they're really really dirty. I say, I have chickens, they don't get smelly like...

I'm building my own, maybe that would be an option? I got to pick out how big I wanted it as well as exactly how it looked. I have ZERO knowledge of building anything, and only a handsaw and the odd screwdriver to work with. Oh, and a box of nails but no hammer, lol! My dad has...
I wanted to get one of those blue giant barrels (55 gallon?) and add a spout on the bottom (like for were you attach a hose? Don't know the name, lol), so that I can collect rain water for the chickens drinking water. I'm also wanting to do a pvc waterer for the chickens. I have seen the rain...
