An Electric Fence Primer for the Total Beginner Part I

No problem. Just realized, there is a second issue with weaving the tape/rope into the hex wire. It will make contact with the wire so the wire would still have to be well insulated from ground.

An Electric Fence Primer for the Total Beginner Part I

I gave my thoughts on fence tape in Part II of the primer: While I've never used fence tape or rope I have some very definite opinions on the subject. While it's probably easy to work with it's outrageously expensive. Okay, so I'm cheap. My second objection stems from the fact that the conductor...

An Electric Fence Primer for the Total Beginner Part I

I see several problems with his "solution". First thought; Aluminum is not a good idea for electric fencing because of the likelihood, over time of galvanic corrosion reducing the amount of electricity getting to the fence, and you can't solder aluminum. My second thought is no run is...

Heard On the News; "And the Police Suspect..."

Woke up this morning and got to thinking about this one. When I was a little boy there used to be a similar sign, although they've pretty much disappeared from the scene today that said: As a child I used to wonder "If I posted a bill was someone likely to come along and pay it?"

Heard On the News; "And the Police Suspect..."

Good one Teila! Many years ago I saw an official road sign that read, "NO TRUCKS PASSED THIS POINT".

Heard On the News; "And the Police Suspect..."

FOWL PLAY! Hmmmmm? What do chickens, ducks and geese have to do with this crime?

Nocturnal Predators - The Final Solution

About $90/month, but than we only AC the bedrooms during the summer. It cost us over $200 in egg sales and replenishing the flock.

Nocturnal Predators - The Final Solution

About 9 months with no further problems from the first night. (The predator was hitting us almost every night. ) Never did for sure, but I'm thinking skunk.

Nocturnal Predators - The Final Solution

Last spring we had a problem with a nocturnal predator that was beheading our birds. It would take away the head, but nothing else. We tried everything; traps, sitting up all night with a shotgun, loud noise, but nothing worked. Our flock was reduced by about 90%. Finally it dawned on me. Take...

Guess Where You CAN Keep Chickens

I was in my doctor's office waiting for my appointment time and the only reading material was People magazine. Now, I don't normally read that because It's mostly about people I don't know and girls who aren't dating any of the local guys, but I noticed one issue had an article about one of my...

Pros and cons of organic vs nonorganic?

Thought someone may find this interesting. It's a Snopes response to a query about the PLU's (That's the produce version of the UPC.) and there's a link to a site that decodes PLU's.

Pros and cons of organic vs nonorganic?

Personally, I don't think there can be a definitive answer for a minimum of three generations of humans. Short term studies on lab animals are worthless (Anyone besides me remember the Great Saccharin Scare of 1977?). There are currently three major groups; 1. The nature made good, man made bad...

    Is this coop sufficient?

Agreed! Really spoils you for eating breakfast in a restaurant though.

    Is this coop sufficient?

We've kept as many as 16 chickens and ducks with only a couple of small, simple sheds (About 5'X5'X3'). The tops are hinged to facilitate egg collection and cleaning. They spend most of their time outside anyway.

Comment by 'OldGuy43' in article 'How much does it cost to raise backyard chickens?'

The only real problem that I've had with raising my own hens is that it has spoiled me for eating breakfast at a restaurant. I used to love the omelets at a local restaurant, but now not so much.

    A Texas Tradition

Here in Texas there is a tradition dating back to the war o' the secession that says that anyone who enters your home on New Years Day should eat black eyed peas for luck. Since I was born and raised north of the Mason-Dixon Line I have been working on perfecting my recipe for several years. I...

Pros and cons of organic vs nonorganic?

A good question. After considerable consideration I have come up with several possible long term solutions. Unfortunately, the "every sperm is sacred" crowd. really hate them. Sorry, didn't mean to highjack the thread.
