We have predators really bad out here, so I definitely want some way to lock them up at night. BUT we also don't get up super early in the morning, so they're locked up probably 12 hours a day between sundown and when we get up and let them out in the morning. I could always ask my husband to...
That's awesome! So it's just a pine shaving floor - no nests or anything needed? Also, I don't usually give them food at night but I do give them water...at what age do you think they're ok going without water overnight?
How do you house your geese? I mean, like, if someone asked me what they needed for a chicken coop, I'd say a roost and a nesting box. What do you do for geese? I have 1 month old gosslings and they're still in the brooder with their "sister" chickens. The two of them poop soo much that I have...
I'm having the same issue. I've hatched twice now...last time I don't remember the numbers but I had nearly 100% develop all the way. 2 died not having absorbed the yolk (but fully formed otherwise) and the others all seemed completely ready to get out...they just didn't. This time I've had 3 of...
I'm plenty familiar with chicken brooders - it's the modifications I'd really like to see/talk about. I have my first 2 baby goslings and they're definitely a bit different than baby chicks!
I searched for a thread like this but didn't find anything. I'd love to see pics of where everyone is keeping their babies! Also love to see your ideas for waterer as well. :)
So I have goslings that are about 2 weeks old. They have definitely imprinted on me...I can't walk by the brooder without picking them up without them having a fit (my husband, however, they could care less about, lol). I've taken a lot of effort to hand raise them as I've heard adult geese can...
I got the skirt dug in today. Used 36" hardware cloth (1/4"), and put 2 ft against the run and 1 foot skirt out the side. I think it's going to work, and as a plus, I hopefully won't lose any more through the fence anymore with the 2" of hardware cloth protection over it. Sadly we're still...
I thought about this, but my next thought is that if it's not dug down, what's to keep them from digging under the skirt? My yard is slanted down towards the coop, so unfortunately the coop gets most of the runoff and the ground around it is just soft, easy-to-move dirt. I'm not sure how to...
Ok, so I'll probably go out and take pictures tomorrow so you guys can help me out more thoroughly, but I'm keeping myself from being overwhelmed with sadness by keeping my mind working, so I figured I'd go ahead and ask for suggestions while I'm up anyway.
Over the last week we've been losing...
So this happened to one of my eggs last hatch and I had to help the baby out, but I never know when to intervene and when not to! I have a webcam on my incubator now.

This little guy pipped yesterday morning, almost as soon as they went into lockdown...
My first chick of this batch is currently hatching live!!! He's not unzipping but making a big hole...I hope he's not stuck...what do you more expirienced people think?

Finally got my eggs from MPC today! I ended up with 7 Marans (YAY!!!) 3 RIR and 3 EE (although they look really white to me to be labeled EE...). I added 3 brown eggs from our flock, 2 or 3 olive eggs, and I'm expiriementing with my favorite grocery store eggs. I've definitely seen donuts...
Getting a dozen eggs from My Pet Chicken today. :) I got the educators package, and according to the email I'm getting RIRs, EEs, and Marans. That makes me really happy because when I called, I really wanted Marans but they said they weren't laying well. So I also got 2 Maran eggs from a friend...
I came home from class tonight to a broody hen! So apparently I will have the 2 chicks I hatched last batch, whatever hatches out of the dozen + I'm getting from MPC (whenever they finally get here), AND a few from Barbara. Phew. I didn't plan this many babies! lol
My eggs still haven't shipped. :( I chose first available because the website said they could ship within 48 hours...um, I ordered almost 2 weeks ago. I guess first available means you dont' care when you get them, so you go in line behind people who do care? I don't know. :/ Supposedly they're...
Soak the birds for plunking? How do you do this? I'm assuming it's not boiling water since it's a plastic tub... (can you tell I'm REALLY new to all this? lol)
Does anyone know if it's possible to take the cord apart on the LG turner? I really don't like the idea of drilling a giant hole in my bator big enough to get the whole head of the cord through...I moved the covers over where the wires are joined but it looks like they're sodered together. I...
