It really is Craig's fault that we have chickens....no it really is mine, but it's more fun to tell people his story.
About 2 years ago, Craig had to be driven to work for medical reasons, and on the way to work, they passed a house with chickens free ranging in the front yard. So being the type...
oppossums (sp?). they do exactly what you described to birdies.
sorry you are having this problem. We had possums last year and I'm hoping they dont come back again, but we will see.

we found a vet close by who treats chickens. We ended up putting her down. She was eggbound and an internal layer. The doctor said she would have died on her own soon. So I'm glad we did it, but it was almost $100!! Money we don't have.
Oh well.
RIP Ms. Orpy!

Orpy our BO approx 1 year old is an internal layer, I suspect. She had a prolapsed vent at about 6 months of age, we got that taken care of, so we thought. She had been laying pretty consistently for quite a while, but recently, she has been laying soft shelled eggs, and no hard ones. Her bottom...

Happy Chickens Day! Bak bak bak
well he wanted straight poo, so that's a loss for us. I need to go onto my local harvest listing and modify my description. I know someone out there wants compost, so hopefully we can get rid of all the excess litter.
Thanks guys for your feedback. I know I can always count on you for any...
Ok so I'm selling my chicken manure to a guy this Friday. But I'm wondering, since I have never seen chicken manure any other way than what is in my yard, what consists of manure? I mean, we have pine shavings, hay and poop all mixed together and decomposing. Is this considered manure? I'm just...
you know what's funny though...is I've gotten fertilized eggs from the store, many times! I know it was because there was an almost fully developed chick inside. yuck! I wonder how many of us have eaten fertilized eggs in our lifetime and never knew it? Probably a lot!
Anyways, I got another...
Thanks guys... I knew you all would understand.
I think next time I will do like you said cluckchick, and just post eggs. No sizes. that way there is no expectations!
~Caran
So I advertised my eggs on Craiglist and some guy wants 36 of them. He comes to get them and off he goes. In my ad I listed the eggs as an assortment of medium to large sizes. Most are medium with an occasional large.
Anyways, I sent a follow up email to him asking him how he liked his eggs...
Hen Daddy (my dh) has created some stands for heat tool guns that us crafty people use for heat embossing. .
It's about 11" high and 10" wide at the base. It's made out of very durable and sturdy mdf, so it won't fall apart. It also has a slot for the cord to tuck into in the back of the stand...
hubby the resident bird expert agrees with OP that it is a screech owl, red stage.
Very beautiful pictures! We both are very envious that you actually got to hold it in your hands....ahhhhhhh
I'm glad your girlies and cat are fine though...

so we just built a 4x4 coop for 8 hens. Well actually we finished building it about a couple months ago. It's new, is my point.
We live in the lovely pacific northwest where it rains ALOT, and we've noticed mold on the inside panels and ceiling of this new coop. We do have ventilation in there...
I have a gold sex link that lays an egg just like your "ugly" one. It's kind of interesting, it looks pinkish when dry, but if you wet it, it is brown. Is that the same with yours?
My other gsl lays a nice dark brown colored egg. But both girls laid their first at 21wks. I will have to get a...
I have some stuff I want to sell, like embelishments, stamps, papers, ya know that kinda thing, and was wondering if I can post it under this topic? Or should I just put it under the BST-other stuff section?
What are the rules to this?
~Caran
From what I know about brahmas in general is that they are slow to mature. so they may not lay until they are about a year old. YOu might give her a couple more months before you decide what to do with her.
Also, can you show pictures of her comb and wattles? Are they red or a light color?
