I am currently a very happy lunch lady. However, I've always wanted a job working with animals - I'd be perfectly happy being surrounded by them all day long! When hubby said I should think about going back to school, I told him I'd like to be a Veterinary technician! HURRAY FOR ME...
I have a play train table - the kind you use to set up a wood thomas the train set on - it's an octagon about 4' in diameter, and about 1-2 ft high. It's got storage space underneath and everything... and I just KNOW there is a way to get a coop out of it!!! I just can't seem to find out how...
Debating what kind of chickens I want. I want some that will lay well, though they don't need to be production types. Because we are limited in size, I'm considering banties for their temperaments - but I've heard they don't lay well?
When i looked around Mypetchicken.com I noticed it said the polish breeds (as well as other cute hatted breeds) are not hardy in winter. What does that mean? I would love to have one with my future flock, but I'd want it to be safe and warm during our long winters!
How do you take care of the chickens during winter? Do you still let them run outside or do you keep them cooped? How does feed change? Remember, i'm in VT where a 'warm' winter is one that DOESN"T go below 0 degrees (and that's during hte day!)
I do know I plan to get winter-hardy breeds...

Friend of my co-worker has one of these for her backyard flock - just 5 birds.
What do you think?
Hey everyone - I'm a pure newbie - as in, no chickens yet!
Hubby is a former city-boy who won't let me get them yet.
Hoping to learn and live vicariously through you guys till I get my own flock!
