My 7 week old chicks are dying. :-(

Day 13 - Homemade Incubator with shipped eggs questions

I just went through this exact thing... If it was me I would just not turn the SFH the last few days of the 18 day cycle, I would just lock them all down together. I did that recently and really saw no difference. But if it bothers you, you could split the days and turn the 1st ones through...

    Advice please?

It's survival of the fittest! It will either hatch or not. I personally don't help my chicks as they attempt to hatch. In my experience, the chicks that take the longest to hatch are the weakest and don't survive more than a week or so. So I let nature take its course.

eggs have not hatched yet help!

Were these eggs shipped to you? I had BO eggs that were shipped to me that took 24 days to hatch. If you can candle them and they are still alive then just be patient, perhaps they will still hatch. Perhaps candle again in 4 days.

    Are Rhode Island Reds aggressive?

My RIRs were quite aggressive and because of this we no longer have them in our flock. We had gotten some Sliver Laced Wyandotte's which are a more docile breed and they wouldn't leave them along.. stressed them out. They were always chasing everyone else around.

FarmGirlForLife sent me 9 buff orpington eggs in a swap. Today I placed them into lockdown. Of the 9; 7 are developing and in most I could see the little chick moving, 1 was accidentally broken by my 15 year old helper that dropped another egg on it and the other not developing was "soupy"...

You could always offer them as one of your offers and see if they get claimed. That might be a good indication if people would be interested or not.

Thanks... this is a little late for snow, but it does happen. Seems like we are having a repeat of last year, it was a very cold spring.
