Here is a picture of the inside of my elevated coop. I have the wall off to paint it and to build the pop up door.
I also took pictures of the grit and oyster shell trays I put in today.
This thing is kicking my butt, I am tired, but it's almost done (for now, I doubt that it will ever be 100%...
We got 6, 1 year old laying hens for free today!!! The coop is not 100% done nor is the nesting box but they are happy scratching around down below! Woohoo, we are chicken parents!!!
there are 3 different varieties, two of each and i would love to know what kind they are (the previous owner...
Also, I have been cultivating the dirt inside the coop this whole time. It is full of seeds, worms and grubs, totally ready to be dug up by some chickens!
If it doesn't rain tomorrow (rain everyday in May in San Diego, WTF!) I will get to painting and will be ready for chickens!
Woo hoo...
Still plugging along on this as I have the time and money lol.
The run ended up right at 80 square feet. Between the run and free ranging that should be enough for 5 hens. I still need to add some roosts and pvc feeder, oyster and waterer.
The coop is 24 square feet with 6 feet of roosting bar...
Remove the insulation, paint the walls and floor (you should use a livestock safe paint), cover the floor with vinyl rolled flooring maybe, put in lots of ventilation up high and some windows down low that can be opened and closed. The nesting boxes and perches are the easy part.
Add a pop up...
I'm really hoping to get this thing finished in less than 2 years and as November is fast approaching (I started in Nov 2017!) I figured that I should get to work! Honestly, life has just gotten in the way but I'm not in a hurry.
Yesterday I got the roof sheathing on but then ran out of drip...
Ghetto? I am not sure if I am I being complemented or insulted!
I could not think of a better, more secure, door than this, plus it was sitting in my back yard. I see them pretty often on Craigslist for free as well fyi.

Made a bit more progress between yesterday and today. I scored a nice load of free 2x4's off of Craigslist which definitely helped. The fact that there was not a straight board in the bunch didn't bother me much as I am not even trying to build it square, plumb nor level! One thing that has...
I cannot believe that it's been so long since I've i started this, and no i still don't have chickens lol.
So much life had put the breaks on this project but now I am trying to finish the coop/run before having surgery in a couple weeks so that we can get chickens when we get back from a road...
Figuring out the roof was a nice workout for my brain and will be a bear to lift off but will be removable in one piece that will fit in the back of a pick up truck. Like the title says, I don't even have chickens yet but I hope I enjoy having them as much as I enjoy designing and building...
Been super focused on finishing our remodel but I had a few minutes today to get back to the coop. I shot nails through the pressure treated 2x4's and the walls will be screwed to that. I am trying to build it in pieces so it can be taken down, moved or god forbid sold should I decide to give...
Got the form stripped today and everything looks pretty good. I will be shooting down pressure treated 2x4's and then the real building can begin! I salvaged a security screen door from our remodel I am considering using for the human door into the run.
