how often do i need to clean??

I am constantly amazed at my chickens. I use hay and every couple of months they empty the coop's hay out into their run. That is when I do a clean up job on the coop. The coop never seems smelly or nasty. I put fresh hay on top and they mat it down by the next day.

Why do we love chickens so much?

My family can't get over the fact that I'm raising chickens and they actually end up envious of all the fun we are having when I tell them of all the chicken antics at our house. They are as fascinated as I am over these wonderful creatures. To think that most of my life I was afraid of birds...

2 Hatched today 7 more Possibilities?

Just when I was ready to give up, Lucky Girl my broody Bantam who has been sitting on her pullet sisters eggs just hatched two chicks today. I filled the water bottle with electrolyte water figuring it would be good for her as well and put out the starter feed. Lucky did nibble on the fresh...

    23 Days and Counting

I don't know about the day old chicks, but I certainly could try. Thanks for the help. We will try to candle the eggs. They are brown eggs so I'm not real confident that we'll be able to see all that much shadow/light.

    23 Days and Counting

My Lucky Girl has been sitting on her nest and I think we may have a dry run here. She is a Bantam and the one Bantam egg in the nest has not hatched- I was pretty sure it wasn't fertile. But the other donor eggs from her pullet girlfriends who donated daily till I relocated her and stopped the...

    Now they are decorators too!

First of all, my 13 chickens have a screened in area that is about 400 square feet, a small section of it got pretty messy with some recent rainy days that we had. I had just done house cleaning on the coop the week before and had completely changed out the hay and had washed out droppings...

Our cochin banty is broody, now what?

My banty cochin is in day 6 of being broody, she has 2 of her eggs and 7 of the pullet eggs! She has them all tucked under her! I tried moving her to a maternity ward nest on day 3 but she'd have none of it. She went back to the original nest and laid her second egg. So, I put the eggs back...

    Do Cochin Roosters Crow?

I don't know why yours isn't crowing but my cochin is the Alpha and he keeps 3 other roosters in line. I have noticed the other boys are more vocal than Zulu- my feather footed black warrior rooster- protector of the flock! But he does crow when he feels like it.

    Teenage Banty Mom?

My little black cochin girl has only been laying 3 weeks and two days ago she decided to stay on the nest. Is it possible for her to be ready for motherhood so soon? We have 4 (unfortunately-though I love them all and haven't been able to rehome 2 of them) roosters so I have little doubt that...

I got my first egg today and I am amazed that it was laid in the nesting box too! These smart little cluckers! They are incredible, I just can't get over how they know when to go to bed, where to put the eggs....I wish children and employees were this easy! LOL

3 Roos and 10 Hens- Why are the boys so bad?

Being very new to this, we bought chicks not knowing what we were doing and ended up with 3 roosters in the flock. Of the three one is really a pretty bad boy-Cleo. He just seems determined to bite all the girls. Zulu- defends the girls and will take on Cleo and send him packing. Rocky...
