Roo with very pale comb and wattles

I have a very special to me Black Copper Marans roo that is almost a year old. he had some dark spots on his comb this week that i thought were dried blood spots from an altercation with another rooster. This morning I went out and his comb and wattles are exceptionally pale - I have never...

    Seafood for chickens?

I work for a seafood restaurant and we cut our own fish. Could I give scraps (including bones) to the chickens? If I can, do they have to be cooked or can I feed them raw? I know they'll eat just about anything but I just don't know if its safe. Thanks, Georgetta

Young Roo pecking feathers of hen

I have a young BC Marans roo that has 3 hens to keep him company until his pullets are grown up. Today DH noticed that one of the hens had been plucked and was bloody on her back and saw the rooster peck at her. I re-homed the hen in another coop so she could heal but I have no idea what to do...

    Hilarious moment

My teenagers (chickens) are 8 weeks old. We moved them up to our duplex coop last weekend with a heat lamp and everything is going well. Last night at 8 I went out to close them up and 2 were outside scratching around so I came back later when I was in my bathrobe and jammies. We have...

I made oatmeal for my chickens!

I have to say that before today I thought people were crazy for feeding oatmeal to their chickens. That was before today. I made oatmeal for my 7 hens and their roo. I put it on a cookie sheet and brought it out to the run. They acted like it was the best thing since sliced bread:D It was...

    What is spurring?

I have two roosters in different coops but I have no clue about roosters attacking or what people mean when they say the roosters spurred them. One of mine is young but will eat out of my hand and the other is just a little bit standoffish. No attacking. Do roosters normally attack?

Inside coops - what's your setup?

We see lots of pictures of lovely coops and runs but I would love to see the inside of people's coops to see how they've laid things out. I know in my first coop we made some design oops that we won't make again, but I'd like to see other people's floor plan. Thanks

When to let rooster mix with his new girls

I have a 5 month old Black Copper Marans (the patriarch) and 9 straight run 5 week old fuzzybutts. They are sharing a very large brooder with a hardware cloth divider until our coop was finished. When do you think we could allow them to be together without that divider. They were in the...

Space saving feeder (wall mounted) - any ideas ?

Building new coop which will be divided into two pens plus storage. I was thinking that instead of hanging a feeder we could find something wall mounted to free up floor space. We will probably have 12-15 in each pen. Thanks for your ideas.

Coop bedding - Does anyone use straw?

We have an existing coop and have always used straw in it. It is inexpensive and works ok. Since recently joining this forum I learned that many people use pine shavings or other bedding. My husband says it will be to expensive to use shavings in two chicken oops. Any thoughts?

    Broody RIR changes nests?

This goofy bird is broody so I thought I would let her hatch some eggs. The problem is that when I let her set on the eggs, the next morning I went out and she had changed nesting boxes and was sitting on a different egg. I thought I would wait a while before leaving her with eggs, and I...

    I just got my babies

I'm so excited. I got 14 cuckoo marans pullets (hopefully) this morning. We already have 9 black copper marans babies (3 weeks old) and black copper roo named money who is 4 months old and an assortment of laying hens in a separate coop. It's also a beautiful day today. I'm normally a lurker...

    Brooder floor covering

Is there a reason to use wood chips instead of straw? I'm getting my first Black Copper Marans chicks tomorrow. They are already 2 weeks old but it's now warm enough to ship. I'm so excited. The breeder called and said there are 5 "shipping peanuts" in with them. I had to look up and find...
