Earlier this summer one of my hens became broody. I moved her to a safe private coop where she sat for two weeks then walked off. This time when someone went broody I watched carefully but did not move her out of the big coop. This evening when I checked (hatch date tomorrow) the egg was...
From your avatar it looks like you have a heeler. I do too, and she's way more of a threat than my nine cats are. She will leave the grown chickens alone but can't be trusted one second with the babies.
I don't know if it's actually the stomach or what, but right past where the poop comes out one of the chicks looks like he is just full of something? Poop? It's not hard but gives when I push on it. There isn't any poop stuck all over, doesn't look like pasty butt.
I was reaching down into...
Okay, everyone is on the Corid now. I made my baby chick space smaller for just a while so there's no chance anyone will miss getting a drink asap. I'll go give them more room in about 15 minutes.
I dumped out all the water they drink everywhere on the farm and put out waterers with Corid...
They were shipped May 23 from Ideal poultry. 10 were hatched from my own silkie eggs. Never been outside. They look fine, then get lethargic, then are dead within 12 hours. Not pasty butt.
Any ideas welcome. I'm getting desperate not to lose all the babies. I started out with about 50...
The heat is right, the water and food are right, every day I find 1-3 more dead chicks. Should I move them into a different coop? Clean out everything and start over.
I am just sick. These were silkies and d'uccles in colors I did not have and they are dying every. single. day.
I was hoping the hen could watch and teach the chicks with some help from the extra heat lamps. Apparently not such a good idea as I thought. I'm going to separate them.
I took mom out at night because late one night when I went to check on them she had about 20 under her and the one on the bottom was almost dead.
In the picture above they are all under the heat lamp just because I was in there and they all moved away from me. They don't usually gather under...
I hope this isn't a re-post.
I've got 31 babies in here with one mama hen. They are in a corner of the coop partitioned off by a little fence. Regular waterer and feeder. Most of the shavings are scooped out. There are two heat lamp areas available. I was afraid they were suffocating...
I put antibiotics in the water when they started dying. They have wood shavings. One or two had pasty butt but I cleaned them up. What about the shavings?
I got a shipment of 27 chicks from Ideal and after about a week I've found 1-3 dead every day. They have enough heat, room to get away from the heat, tetracycline in their water.
What can I do? At this rate I'm going to lose every single chick. They are silkies and d'uccles.
I think it depends on the hen. I've got a broody I could probably move every day and she wouldn't mind at all. Not advisable, just saying some are laid back and some freak out.
