I have 10 chickens 3 months old and in their coop for about 1 1/2 months. Three will go outside while the other 7 won't have anything to do with it. How can I coax them out or what it they never go out?
My chicks are now 5 weeks old - how fast they grow! - and I'd like to feed them some treats but how do I know if they are eating the grit I put out? I sprinkle it on crumbles and have a feeder with it in, but haven't seen them eat it. Do I just assume they are?
Loved your site. Can't believe how quick they are growing, mine are 4 weeks old now and in their big girl coop. I'm a nervous wreck and miss their peeping. I am getting more exercise thought going out to the coop to check on them.
I am using the same thing. I first put down painters plastic, then newspaper, pine shavings and for the first couple of days paper towel. I know it sounds like alot but mine are in a spare bedroom with bare wood floors. I'm done with the paper towels - no spraddle legs yeh - and the chicks...
Thank you for this information. I had read things such as this, but guess I forgot it all when I saw those tiny earthworms and thought they would be a good size for the chicks. I'm going to just stick to their chick feed now.
OH NO! I thought that it would be ok since if they were outside they would be eating things like this. Guess I won't do that again, since I've been lucky so far with these chicks and haven't lost any.
Mine are two weeks old and have been kicking the shavings since the were about a couple of days old. it's so interesting that they know to do this all by themselves. i've even seen them doing the dust bath routine in the shavings.
just gave my ten babies two tiny earthworms and what fun to watch. at first they didn't know what to do with the squirmy thing, but then one picked it up and off to the races we went. they ran all around the brooder and chased the one with the worm, the worm got dropped, picked up by another...
On the "home" page of this forum is a really interesting article on feeding medicated feed versus non medicated. I'm a nooby and am feeding my 10 chicks medicated.
Only what I have read...that they are good layers, cold hardy and pretty docile. But they sure are cute! About a week and a half old and just starting to get tail feathers - mixed with down they are a hoot.
I gave it to my new chicks that I picked up from the feed store(wyandottes) and the just pecked at it a little. It's only good for 6 hours after mixing it with water. I only gave it to it them that one time, so don't know it it helped or not.
I've read on this forum that ACV is good for new born chicks and helps prevent pasty butt, but then the other day I read it's not good for them. Could someone help me. Should I give it to them as soon as I get them or not give it to them at all. Thanks.
I don't know if this is where to post this, but for the second month, I've been dropped of the daily mailing list. It happened in January at the beginning of the month, and now the beginning of this month. Do I need to write to someone else? What do I need to do? thanks.
