We've had the same thing happen with another hatchery. They would only refund because we didn't want to order more. I was upset at first, but it really makes perfect sense. We don't want more to die and neither do they. We don't want to lost $ and neither do they. We want it all fixed and so do...
At our home for the last 8+ years we have raised chickens, turkeys, and guineas. We are considering now the idea of ducks, but I have some concerns.
My biggest concern is their ability (or lack of ability) to escape predators. (Our neighbors have some vicious dogs that get out about 6 days a...
Sorry, I forgot I am an obsessive candler, but I make sure not to candle after 16 days. They don't ssem to like to be bothered much in their last few in-shell days.
Good Luck!
I don't really have any advice except to say that I've mostly had really good hatches, but I have had some not so great hatches as well. I keep my incubator at 50-55% during the first 17 days and days 18-21 I raise it to 65-68% or so. The red vent plugs are suppose to be in the entire time until...
If you're really concerned about building with cedar, build with pine, etc. and stain the outside (make sure it has time to air out before putting chickens in.)
While my eggs are incubating I ALWAYS have the humidity around 50-55% and raise it at the end (last 3 days). I always have great hatch rates so I am sure you could at least raise it to 55% and have them all be fine. (My parents only raise their humidty to 60% for days 18-21.)
I just had some...
I'm not sure if you were saying that the redish hen in your pics is a hen, but it is. It would also lay tan eggs that may have a slight pinkish tint. Perhaps you have 2 hens. If they were all roosters w/just one hen I would think there would be an immense amount of fighting.
I'm sure you've got all of your Q's answered, but...
I think the pin thing would be fine, but if it makes you feel more comfortable with something else then go for it. There are some pretty tricky predators and some pretty tricky people-a lock never hurts.
The chicken and tools coexisting will...
Starting them at different times is fine as long as when you add the second group of eggs you watch the temperature closely-it will most likely change. Depending on what the ebayer told you (and how honest you believe they are) their eggs may be quite fresh and be fine sittin until the others...
My son is raising Broad Breasted Giant White turkeys for 4-H. We have had Royal Palm Turkeys, chickens, and guineas for years, but this is a first w/ the giant white. Anyway, I have no idea what blackhead looks like (though I know all of the symptoms from every book and every post I've read-so...
Do chickens and/or guineas lose/shed/get new claws? I've had chickens for 8+ years and never noticed if they did. HOWEVER, four of our guineas (1 1/2 years old) have lost their back claws during the winter. I don't know what could have bothered them-they have been inside most of the winter. Just...
I would think that this would have the opposite effect. I can't believe it would increase hatch rate. Though, on ebay and other sites of the sort I have seen "partially incubated eggs" for sale and I always thought ..."only a moron..." However, as long as you don't mind then go for it! If that's...
I have been raising chickens/turkeys/guineas for 8+ years. Our guineas have hatched many of their own keets, but all of the other birds-we do the hatching. I have a BO that has become broody. She doesn't want to be messed with, and that's fine with me. I'd love to let her hatch her own chicks...
I may be a bit late, but....I have (multiple times) used candle wax and actually most of the time melted crayon. It works wonders! I've never had it fail! I'm not sure how long your egg was cracked, but it can't hurt to try!
I would also be aiming a bit higher for the temp. Around 100 F is usually the goal, however 99-101 is usually fine. The humidity that I have always used and have always seen recommended for the first 18 days is about 50 % then increase to around75 % or so.
