Set Jan 29, Hatch Feb 19/20 Join Me!

I am setting eggs this evening (Jan 29). I will set 41 eggs in a Little Giant equipped with a computer fan and egg turner. This is my first ever attempt. I would like some folks to join in on this hatch date. I know I will have many questions along the way and maybe we can help each other...

Why did my hens stop laying all of a sudden?

I had two separate flocks, one flock had 8 hens and a roo, the other 9 hens and a roo. I purchased 4 more hens and kept them separate for 2 weeks. At that time I was getting a total of 12-13 eggs a day from a total of 21 hens using an early morning light to keep egg production up in the...

    chickens adopt a kitten

We had a stray kitten show up out of nowhere last week. For a couple days, it hid out under the coop and I think it was sneaking into the run and eating the rooster's food 'cause I noticed the feed was disappearing faster than usual. The kitten would run away as soon as any humans got near the...

Any pictures of roo and hen silkies? I don't know what I have!

I have a pair of silkies, one blue and one buff. Neither have any kind of comb or waddles that I can see. They are both around 4 months old. I don't know if I have roos or hens. Any help?

Colored chicks!! Updated Pictures July 7th!

Here's my new additions. Went to the feed store this morning to pick up 2 or 3 colored chicks for the kids. Came home with 6. I put them in with my 3 blue orps that just hatched. I know I should have kept them separate but I have no other brooder available at the moment so I'll take my chances.

Can I take 3 day old chicks away from mother? Updated with results

I am very cramped for space. I have mother Buff and 3 Blue Orp babies in the coop alone. She hatched them out for me. I tried letting my other hens in with them, but they peck at the chicks. So now the hens are outside in the run. The nest boxes are inside the coop. So my hens can't get to...

My docile roo has gone off the deep end! Updated, making progress!!

Sorry about the long post. I just want to make sure all the info is here so I can get some help.... I have a Buff Orp roo that has been a sweetheart for several months now. A gentleman with the ladies and a provider and protector for the whole flock. I could be in the coop or run and not...

    brother/sister mating ok?

I am wondering about who should mate with who. I have a handful of RIRs, for instance. If I wanted to hatch out more reds, would the eggs from a bro/sis be good ones? Or do I need to go looking for a different bloodline roo, etc? I used the RIR for an example. I would like to know about...

    Handyman, or handychicks...

I was working on the chicken run today, with lots of help, of course...('scuse the quality, cellphone pics)... I was trying to cut in a new doorway, and as soon as I did... Curious little buggers! Wouldn't move out of the way. Pecking at my tools, shoes, wedding ring, everything!

How many hens to keep me supplied with eggs for my family?

I have really searched for a definitive answer to this question before posting and this IS my first post. I have a family of 4. We like eating eggs and not just for breakfast. We usually go through about 1½ to 2½ dozen eggs per week. Roughly how many hens would it take to supply this many...
