    Egg gender selection survey

I just set 82 eggs tonight. I separated into "ones that looked pointy" and "rounded ones" so I would love to participate as I get info!

    Bumblefoot??

Honestly I have no idea. I should have gone to pick them up there instead of meeting halfway in between, but because I did I have no idea what their living conditions are like. As mud caked as they were, it must be pretty bad.

    Bumblefoot??

The other thing that I've noticed is that they smell. REALLY Badly. In fact, I bathed them all when they came home and had to change clothes because they smelled so bad. Today, if I walk back past where they are within about 20 feet you can smell them.....outside...... I'm not sure if that's...

    Bumblefoot??

Thanks! I will try that if I can find it. I'm assuming I could get it at most places that sell fish?

    Bumblefoot??

Yesterday I went and picked up some half grown chickens from someone I had hatched them for earlier this spring. The plan was that I hatched, he raised, I got hens, he kept the roos. No problem. Until I picked them up. They are small for 9-12 weeks (2 batches) and most don't want to move a whole...

    Premature chicks?

Thanks! Yes, I think I was jumping the panic gun a little early.... after a day it was not as noticeable- I think that since they are so wet it looks worse than when they dry out. I still have a very low hatch rate.... 12 out of 33 ( 26 that I know were developing) and lost two chicks overnight...

    Premature chicks?

I'm hatching 33 mixed eggs for a class at my school. Every time we candled I thought it looked like they were behind. I'm using the little giant incubator- which I'm not happy with. For the second year in a row we've had problems keeping a specific temp. I know, I know, I get what I pay for...

    Incorporating new chickens/rooster question

My heavens, no, I don't take it as criticism- I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to know! I think they are being kept separate because if I throw scraps or scratch everyone rushes out to get it. The new Roo gets in between the young and the old and soon the old run away back into the coop...

    Incorporating new chickens/rooster question

Hi All!! It's been a while since I've posted, but I've been reading! I haven't been able to find the answer to this question though. I have a flock of birds that until yesterday was 8 hens and a rooster. They were raised (mostly) together and are about 18 months old. The rooster was horribly...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Like I said, I know the list was long, but this gives me a great way to start to narrow down. I am open to a lot of different breeds, and actually like the idea of helping a breed that is in need of breeders. That's why I started on the Livestock Conservancy page.... I grow heirloom seeds for...

Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Hi All! I have been lurking on both this thread and it's predecessor, and although I have tried to read every post I do have to admit to skipping a couple (hundred) pages in the middle of this one.... it updates WAY too fast to keep up when you're several hundred pages behind ;-) I have loved...

    Stupid Rooster....and a question?

I have a rooster that I hand raised. We had 2, got rid of one, and had had no problems (well, they were fighting over a hen, but besides that....) until the second rooster left. That was 3 weeks ago. Since then the 1 rooster has attacked my friend and I twice. I mean full out attacking, wings...

    Groundhog????

Groundhogs LOVE apples....especially if they are partially rotting, lol. Don't get me wrong, groundhogs will protect themselves, and you really don't want to tangle with one, but they would have no reason to go after a chicken because they simply do not eat meat. I rescued a baby one time from...

    Groundhog????

Groundhogs are most definitely not meat eaters. They love carrots, broccoli, and lettuce though. Maybe the groundhogs was coming in to get at the scraps and the chickens told him no?

Better than a hole in the head... or not...

Thanks for the help everyone! It's great to know that if I have a question an answer is just a few minutes away!!

Better than a hole in the head... or not...

I have her in a dog crate in the coop right now.... I will say (this is my first group of chickens and especially roosters) that the roosters were very worried when they could see her but she was outside the coop. I spread some Neosporin on it, and cleaned as much as I could. She fell asleep on...

Better than a hole in the head... or not...

So, I went out to feed my chickens some scraps a few minutes ago, and sat on the edge of the coop watching them. I saw one pullet pulling something out of the neck feathers of the other...I assumed she had been pooped on or something. Finally she came running at me- I'm assuming being chased by...

    Dumb Questions.....

Okay, I've read a bunch of posts, looked online, and can't find the answers I want, so I'm just breaking down and asking.... I'm a teacher- I tell people there are no dumb questions, but it doesn't help when I have to ask them! lol 1. Am I to assume that if my rooster is mating my hen who has...

    Adding new chickens to flock

My question is kind of along the same lines.... I have 6 (3BR, 3 Red stars) that are 5 weeks older than the 3 (2 red stars and 1 Black star) that came to replace roosters. I put the 3 younger ones in a dog kennel inside the coop, but am wondering how long to leave them? Or, is 5 weeks close...
