Washing eggs before incubation - reason/how to

I thought removing the bloom exposed the egg to more bacteria and the environment? I thought that even though the egg may have a bit of “fecal matter” on it, it was protected by the bloom. I’m still newer when it comes to hatching. That said, I haven’t washed since they don’t get washed in...

    Chick Breed

Looks like there may have been tufts. I’d venture to say possibly crossed with an Araucana. Repeat “possibly”.

    Blue Cochin

Thank you for that explanation. I may have been a chicken momma for several years now, but I’m learning more about other breeds. I’ve been used to barnyard mixes, so I don’t really know much about pure breds. Again, thank you for the explanation.

    Blue Cochin

Well...my BlueBelle...is now BlueRay! Hahaha. I just saw HIM doing the courtship dance to one of my “known” hens. I was for sure he was a she as early as yesterday. I also witnessed him attempting to crow all within about 30 seconds of his side-stomping courtship dance. Dang it! I soooo wanted...

    Oh, I like that!
  9. Grammy Jodi

    What breeds are these chicks?

The smaller dark brown one MAY be a Chocolate Orpington since it seems smaller than the rest.

    Cockerel or Pullet?

Thank you all for your input. I’m much more happy now. I was thinking this beauty was going to have to find a new home. I’m glad she will actually be a nice addition to my ever growing hen population. Darn that chicken math! LOL I currently have another, but she’s pure white, Cochin hen that I...

    Cockerel or Pullet?

This pretty/handsome Cochin is 22 weeks old. It’s flock mates (all the same age) are crowing and have serious hackels and saddles. Albeit they are cream leg bars. And I’ve heard that Cochin mature MUCH slower than many other breeds. My main reason for thinking this may be a cockerel as well is...

how soon after worming can I eat the eggs?

I wormed mine last Thursday (it's now Mon.). I specifically looked on the bottle of Wazine 17 and it said NOTHING about not eating the eggs! What the heck?!? Since it wasn't written on the label, I assumed it was ok to eat them. Now I'm feeling a bit queezy just thinking about it! Geez! The ****...

Could the one with yellow shanks and skin be a White Cochin?
  16. Grammy Jodi

    What breeds are these?

Black one with white earlobes could be either Andalusion or Minorca. The so called "Oreo" ones look to be Silver Spangled Hamburgs.

    EE?

I have also gotten chicks from Murray McMurray. If you send a picture to them via the web, they can tell you for sure what you have. I would agree with her being an EE. I received four from them last October and are the same colors. Mine have been laying for a little over a month now. :)

    Name that pullet:

Agreed! First two look like my EE's, but the third one doesn't. But that doesn't mean she's not. They can be many colors. The green shanks leans me toward saying all three being EE's.

    What am I?

Agreed! White Plymouth Rock. Yellow feet and shanks,:D lays light brown eggs. I had 4, down to 3. A coyote got the other. They are my best pals! :D
