Hello chicken pals,
ok here's the story: we have a blind 3 yr old barred rock hen who has lived w 7 other barred rock hens. Recently she got sick so we quarantined her after visiting the vet. Now she is feeling better but since we have tried to re-introduce her the rest of the flock attacks...
Hi we had the same scenario w.barred rocks and I think it's a roo too. I loved our cockerel too but he started crowing and then attacking us. Barred rocks grow to be large so it could be terrifying to a child. Or adult for that matter! Do you have any rural areas near you? You may try a...
At 100 yards, there are pluses and minuses to both 17HMR and 22Mag. Definitely consider Ruger though, whichever caliber you go with. They were in on the development of the 17HMR round.
I'm on board with the 17HMR choice. I own a Ruger and it is one of the most accurate and well-made guns I've...
I have a two year old Barred rock hen who is blind. Today I let all of my birds out and this hen could not keep her balance. She is putting her wings out to stay upright. She is also warm to the touch. The other birds are attacking her so I have quarantined her and given her Terramyacin.

Hey we live in downtown Atlanta,Ga and we see hawks often, especially when our chickens are enjoying the yard. They circle and sit on tree branches trying to figure out how to grab the girls in such a tight space as our backyard.
I am sorry you lost your girls. It sounds as though...
Hi chicken pals,
Ok does anyone know what this yellowish goo that's all over our eggs is? I have noticed it sometimes but today there is a lovely pile of it in the coop as well as on the eggs. Cannot take a pic now but just wondering if this is anything to be concerned about besides just being...
Hello Chicken Pals,
We have a 1 yr. old Barred Rock hen who is mostly blind. She does not seem to let this affect her- she cruises around OK and manages to find her food regularly. In fact, she is one of the larger hens we have.
Trouble is, she seems like she is much lighter when we pick her...
Hello From the East Coast!
What breed are they? The larger breeds take longer to start laying. My Barred Rocks started at 6 months!
Trust me, the eggs are worth it. Also, the mount of light they get each day may affect laying. If that's the problem, you can supplement light w/ a bulb...
Hey Chicken Pals,
I have a hound dog who has developed sores on her lip and nose. Also, a lack of appetite which is out of character.
I have to think it is because of the introduction of our chickens into the backyard.
Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this is chicken-related? I've...

Your chicks are so cute! He should be fine w/o the light going into the summer and by the time fall approaches, he will have more feathers to protect him.
Have fun!
Hello! Thanks for your response. They are Barred Plymouth Rocks. We have had them loose in the yard so I will investigate the possibility of hiding eggs.
Some of the hen's combs are more red and pronounced than others, so I guess they are closer to being layers?
Is there any possibility...
OK chicken buffs, please help me out. I have five 6 month old hens and one 6 month old rooster. Despite having egg boxes for 1 1/2 months, we have no eggs. They are organically fed and get the right amount of protein. They get 12 hrs. of sunlight now. The temperature is 40-70 degrees...
Thanks to you all for your support and wisdom! What a great group!
I appreciate your encouragement and no,we're not done-- there are pics to to come and we have some lovely Barred Rocks that are quite happy with good old hay. We're not working w/cedar anymore.
You guys rock..I'm grateful...
Hello Fellow Chicken Enthusiasts. My SO and I have just become part of the club with our first {very small} batch of Leghorn chicks.
Our Raising Chickens book claimed that cedar shavings were fine to use as litter for our babies. Soon after getting them set up in a warm place with organic...
