Nice. My cockerels are 18 weeks. Gonna have to get serious about deciding who stays and who goes soon. It is just so dang cold out there. I think they'll get a reprieve for a while since it is to cold to stand out there and evaluate them. I have one that is clearly much larger and has a gorgeous...

I put plastic over one of my chicken tractors and one of my hoop houses using 1x2 lumber. I just rolled the plastic around the lumber, then screwed it to the wooden base of the tractor or to the raised bed under the cattle panel hoops. Working great so far!

What a bunch of cuties, Brian. Hope Lucky/Winky keeps doing well. I just hatched 7 more of her siblings. I have found feather sexing works pretty well on these guys. I have 4 girls, 2 boys, and one that is too wet to tell yet. I have not lost any birds to the weather yet. I have 16 in one coop...

    Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

My cat loves to watch "chick tv." She has never tried to get them out of the brooder box or incubator - but I don't trust her one bit. She hears them peeping and comes running.

Glad you got some! Sad about the little one though. Be super careful about older chicks around it. One that I hatched from shipped eggs stopped using one eye after a day or two. When I moved her in with the bigger chicks they beat her up pretty badly during the night. I had watched all day, they...

One seller generously offered to replace eggs for shipping. EBay sellers were rude and made no such offers.

Oh, those puppies are so cute! Must hide the pics from my daughter. She keeps begging for a dog. Brian, any luck with any of the eggs I gave you? Not sure if I will hatch for New Years. I have been hatching since September. I have 10 due Friday and 6 waiting to go in, and 13 in the brooder...

Anyone in Utah with Russian Orloff, Delaware, Salmon Faverolle, Speckled Sussex, Silver Laced Wyandotte, or American Bresse eggs? I have hatched a few of each, but would like more and I am tired of dealing with the low hatch rates I am getting from shipped eggs.

Sorry, sounds like a rough time with your mom. My mom has been very, very ill for years. Yet, I know when it happens it will be a shock.

So sorry to hear about your mom. We are in the same boat, living with my mom in a house that won't be ours when she goes. She is very ill so we never know if we have a day or a month or another year. I hope you can find a good place for you and all of your pets.

Is there a downside to putting a light in the coop for the winter months?

I was under the impression that Monsanto, et al, own the seeds the sell. So they usually make it clear if they own the seeds so no one grows them without permission.

Cynthia, did Brian say where that striped baby came from? Looks like one I hatched a few weeks back.

I have limited stock to start with. A trio that will be 2 in spring and a dozen that are about 16 weeks old now. The young set are half pullets, half cockerels. I will need to thin them out soon since I am limited legally and practically in the number of birds I can keep. I understand I am...

    Russian Orloffs

Thanks! I have had other breeds hatch anywhere from 2 days early to 2 days late. Hatch time always makes me nervous!

    Bresse Chickens

I have had anywhere from zero to 67% on shipped eggs so far. Total gamble, but very hard to find rare breeds here so I keep trying. Most hatches I get at least a few to work with. My Delaware hatch was very good, 8 from 15 eggs. I find that foam shipping padding usually gives the best results.

    Russian Orloffs

I have no problem getting $25 for a POL bird here. Yes, they are worth that. I recently sold a POL Welsummer trio for $55 and they were hatchery birds. Guy was thrilled to get them for that price. I have 4 or maybe 5 Orloff eggs in lockdown. So excited. They are due Friday. Do the Orloffs...

I'll wager. Whichever of you loses that bet has to send me a dozen chicks. LOL At what age do you all select which birds go in the breeding pen? Is there a cheat sheet somewhere to help a newbie decide how to set up a pair? People talk about which parent contributes color or size or whatever...

Yeah! Glad turkey turned up. For those who don't want to process their own birds, Utah Natural Meats does ours. $5 chicken, $10 turkey, $15 waterfowl. Worth it not to have to wrestle the birds. They are in West Jordan near Jordan Landing.
