Sweet! Thanks Peeps! I was very excited to see so many solid-colored heads, because I really like those. I only have a few solids in my flock, so yippee!
I have a 5-year old chocolate lab, and I raised my new keets last summer around him where he could see them grow up, hoping he would consider them part of his pack. He never warmed up to them really, and he would chase them occasionally when they made sudden movements but never attacked them...
I am very interested in the articles regarding guinea color genetics and thought it would be neat if I could look over some records, if anyone has any. I could not possibly breed enough keets to do a "study" of my own but thought if I could pester anyone who has kept records...
Thanks!
Do you have a spare thermometer to double-check the temperature reading on the incubator? Maybe it is off a little vs. last year. I have heard of that happening.
I have a chocolate labrador who is very energetic and mostly obedient. I raised the guineas from day-old around the dog, hoping he would get used to them, consider them to be part of the pack and not hurt them. That worked for a while - he would chase them, but not work very hard at it. It...
This is my first year to incubate also, and I have been having problems too! You might check the other threads to see some of the answers I got - check out the thread: "It's Official" in the last day or two. PeepsCA has been doing this a long time and is very helpful.
They love white millet, but it is a bit hard to come by this year due to the drought. You might try to find it at a feed store in your area - make sure you ask for WHITE millet. They love it!
They also like greens, like lettuce, but if yours are free-ranging already, they might not respond...
How old are they? The easiest way to tame them is to start when they are babies. It requires handling them quite a bit, like a few hours a day. Then you need to keep it up as they get older. My son used to carry around one of ours as a baby, but then he got busy with school, and over time it...
Thanks to both of you! I appreciate you explaining this stuff to me.
Yes, Peeps, you are right about the staggered hatch. I figured out the problems I had set up for myself by setting them every day, but by then, it was too late. I just had to wait to see how it turned out at that point...
These eggs are from my flock, which are all a year old - what does "pullet" mean? This is my first time to try to incubate eggs, and I got an incubator that had problems with temperature spikes a few weeks ago, so I cannot know for sure what temperature they were incubated at. It was 101.5 on...
The RH in the incubator before I saw the pip was 55%, but I had taken the egg out before I noticed the pip because it was right on the number (argh!). It was only out of the incubator about a minute before I saw it, then I put it back in VERY quickly. I immediately put some wet sponges in...
I had my first pip Saturday night, so I put them in lockdown. I could see the one that pipped pushing on the shell when I went to bed, but it was dead the next morning. When I did an "egg-topsy", it looked like the membrane shrink-wrapped him. The humidity in lockdown was high enough, what...
Oooo, peanut... you really aren't that far, about 4 hours. I am just west of Tulsa. Let me know how things go. It would be the middle of June before I could make the trip, but that is so tempting! =)
How adorable! Thanks for your thoughts on the gauge. I got home last night and the "max" for the day said 107... it is located in my kitchen of my house (away from the ovens) and my son was home all day. He didn't say anything about the house being too hot, so that made me think the gauge...
