Lil Red Chicken Shack We saw a chicken coop on an abandoned farm site and my husband designed and built this coop based on that old coop. All of the framing was done with recycled lumber from our deck. The rest of the materials we purchased new at a lumber yard. The front of the coop is...

Should I close my coop every night?

Close it up tight and protect your flock. I do not have a covered pen but they have plenty of places to escape from an air attack however a night time predator has an unfair advantage and all though a door has been missed or not shut tight we have been lucky to only have been hit once and lost...

Are Buff Orpingtons Considered " Hardy " ?

We had adopted an older Buff Orpington from on Orchard and we had her for four years until she finally died of old age this spring. I would say that they are cold hardy without a doubt since we had no troubles with her in any way in our Minnesota Winters. I plan on ordering more next year she...

    Platform water heaters

I had the same type no warranty and threw mine away because I didn't know what kind of adhesive to use. My wiring also was defective and the pad actually seemed to overheat so I decided that it didn't seem like the best idea to have in a coop with wood shavings. I think they are disposable but...

Questions about adding light, newbi here

Because of our cold climate I have a heat lamp on so they have light 24/7 and I have been doing that for five going on six years. I have a fully insulated coop and keep 20-25 chickens. Last year I switched to a red heat lamp and my production fell so I will be going back to a clear heat lamp...

    getting ready for winter today!

I used it last winter and it worked well. I was concerned about the smell and moisture so I started by puttinga layer of barnlime directly on the floor (plywood) and started with a very thick layer of bedding. It worked great. I am going to install dropping boards so it should even be better...

I may try this, I live in MN so a little colder herer but bought the $49 metal water heater at the feed store that you can only use is with the metal waterer. It worked for one winter, no warranty of course and unable to return it. I was able to get it to work there was a loose wire but the...

    whole chickens

Are they Cronish X or the roos from your hatch of standards? If they are Cornish X depending on size I would say yes to cheap. If they are standard roos no doubt to cheap since they take longer to get to butchering size you have alot more feed in them. Around here people pay 10-15 for a farm...

Do you ALWAYS lock your coop at dusk?

I have gotten home late and locked it well afte dusk numerous times. The few occasions that I actually forgot to lock the coop I went out the next morning and held my breath until I did a head count. No a habit I want to get into and I have been lucky on those few occasions.

Working out a feed budget. QUESTION!

Quote: That is cheaper than my mill. Would they share their "recipe" so I can give it to my elevator and maybe save a little cash. Milling is still cheaper here than buying the premade but it would be interesting to see what they are putting into your mix.

WTB Female Duck- Help fox got the friend- Minnesota Metro Area

I am looking for a female Pekin or limilar breed that would make a good friend. The fox got one of our Pekin ducklings that are now approx 7 weeks old. The other duckling looks lost and the chickens are not being nice now that it is alone. I live in the southeast metro area but I would...

    Help - Cedar Shavings???

Not good for chickens so I would assume not good for ducks. Their mistake so call them up and have them pick up the wrong product and deliver the right product. I read one post that said the fumes and another thought it was the oil. I can't imagine that it would be OK for ducks if it isn't...

    I Lost My Whole Flock!

I am so sorry. I lost a two month old Pekin duck to a fox yesterday and the other duckling looks so lost today it breaks my heart. I am so glad the coons have yet to figure out a way into my coop. I worry about the chicken door because I just have a toggle on the inside at the moment and I...

Who all here gives away their eggs?

I give more away than I sell. I just gave a partial dozen away (10 eggs) to a friend of my DH. I noticed $3 on the counter and I said is that your money and he said yeah for the eggs. I told him if he called and ordered eggs or asked if I had any to sell then I would gladly take his money but...

cost of feeding 6 or so chickens?

I feed the Layena Pellets. I have had no problems with behavior (picking there was information out there that they get mean or aggressive on pellets from the feed store guy). My egg production did not change either. I have 23 chickens (four of them are bantams), I free feed and I am going...

    Cleaning an old coop

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=243217 Post # 6 is the dropping board set up I am going to use. It just looks to easy not to use and the trays are plastic so a hose will clean them off when they need it. Good luck. I got 50% of my chicks from McMurray and this last...
