    Chick Treats

Some of the chicks we have had really like plain yogurt. We just put some in a small dish and they love it. It tends to get all over though, but they really seem to like it and the calcium is good for them. I still give them some for extra calcium as older hens also.

What would this egg be classified?

I went to collect eggs today and found one that was huge. I have 6 barred rocks and 6 red sex link hens. I weighed the egg on a digital scale and it weighed a whopping 3.37 ounces/95.5 grams. Has anyone had an egg this size. My only thought was "OUCH" for the poor girl who layed it. My...

    Nesting boxes recycling idea

Hey all, I was at our local Sam's Club and they had these great boxes that were used for big bags of peanuts. It is about 13 inches deep and 13 inches tall. It is divided in the middle and about 24ish inches wide. The front has about a 4 inch lip. I am using it for two next boxes that just...

    Hot Eggs....

I am in Arizona and I check for eggs in the AM and the mid afternoon. Our eggs are warm regardless of the time we get them. It has been over 100 degrees here for too many days in a row. Our eggs are fine. I actually let them come to room temperature before putting them into the fridge. I...

Triple yolker egg...what are the odds?

I think they are buff Orps. We originally bought them as RR's but others here have said no, that they are cinnamon queen, red sex link, and BO's...I don't care what they are at this point. I am just happy they are laying. I am a bit surprised that we have gotten two in two days of such a...

Triple yolker egg...what are the odds?

Okay, so we used yesterdays huge 3 1/2 ounce egg and it was a triple yolker. Totay when I collected eggs we have a similar sized and weight egg to our triple yolker. What are the odds of having a hen lay triple yolkers on a regular basis? Is it normal? We are consistently getting 5 eggs...

    How did she lay this?

I feed them layer feed, occasional yogurt as a treat and all the veggie and fruit scraps we have. Once in a while they will get the leftover scrambled eggs and crushed up egg shells. They have chicken hutches from Ware in the chicken pen that is 20 ft X 24 ft. I have it covered with a tarp...

Well all, We got a good number of eggs for our first week of laying. A total of 19 eggs ranging from 2 ounces to 3 1/2 ounces. There were 3 eggs with double yolks and the 3 1/2 ounce egg had a triple yolk...Wahoo! I am hoping you can see the pictures of the really big egg...I included a...

My 16 week chick(hen) layed an egg!

We got the girls from our local feed store. I think they get them from Privett in New Mexico. We are so thrilled that she is laying. How fun for our kids!

My 16 week chick(hen) layed an egg!

Okay all, How is this possible? I didn't expect any eggs for at least another month, but when I went to check on the girls one of them was acting a little off, so as I was checking around the coop...there it was a little brown speckly egg...the momma was a barred rock. It wasn't very large...

Chicks are now 8 weeks old (I am hoping all girls)

The feed store listed them as Rhode Island Reds...I paid about $2.25 per bird for all of them. We got the Barred Rocks at the same time. They charge one price for their birds no matter the breed. I don't really care either way as to breed. As long as they are healthy and provide us with some...

Chicks are now 8 weeks old (I am hoping all girls)

So, does anyone think they are all girls? None of them have particularly large combs. 6 are BR and 6 are RIR...anybody? The BR's all have black washed legs in different shades. Couldn't convince them to stand up and pose for the pictures My Curious Georgia

    overnight cat got in brooder

Hey all, on the cat front...we have a fixed male cat who is now about 7 yrs old. When one of our kids was a couple months old, our cat "spud" came to us making an awful sound like he was trying to tell us something. My husband and I followed him and he showed us that she (the baby) had thrown...

Brooder needed to expand for growing girls

Actually have only taken away cardboard covered with pine shavings within the last 1 1/2 weeks. I started by cutting off a corner of the cardboard and worked farther and farther. They are doing fine with it and it makes clean up easier as the pans underneath just slide out and I can dump them...

Brooder needed to expand for growing girls

Okay, so I have 12 (hopefully all) girls that are now 3 1/2 weeks old and have found them getting too big to share only one hutch. I am using the chick-n-hutches from Ware. My solution was to remove the front doors from two hutches and "clamp" them together face to face. I still have the...

    Girls are getting bigger

So, I am hoping that they are still girls. They are about 2 1/2 weeks old now and getting so much bigger. I am hoping that since their combs are still very small and yellowish that they are still girls...any opinions? There are 6 RIR's and 6 BR's.

    Chicken run question for Arizona

Thanks for the quick response. I will definately try to do wood for roosts. I was thinking of wrapping the EMT with something. But I wouldn't have any idea what it could be.

    Chicken run question for Arizona

Hey all, I have learned so much from all of you...my chicks are thankful as well. My question is I found an online site for purchasing the pieces to do canopies. My thought, as our garden/new chicken run is a 20ft by 24ft area and you can buy the pieces to do a "canopy" in that size using EMT...
