Our chickens live off of mostly 20% protein laying pellets and chicken scratch. What % of each should we be giving them? They are mostly hens either laying or beginning to lay?
My uncle do a 50-50 ratio. I think it should be mostly the laying pellets and scratch should be a treat. What ratio...
We had a lot of rain and my eggs are very muddy. I've heard not to wash eggs that go in the bator. What do I do? The mud doesn't just flake off it's painted on pretty good.
I've heard many people dry out eggshells and feed them back for calcium. What about egg shells that chickens have hatched out from? Is that safe?
Thanks for any help.
Thanks again for the responses. How long after cleaning should I let them sit after in the fridge for birds that will be frozen? (these are just farmyard chickens) Also I have some jumbo cornish hens coming. Do I let then sit as wellafter cleaning?
Also just in a pan in the fridge or in water...
Thanks for the info. Has anyone slowly cooked (simmered) a rooster directly after a kill without letting it sit in the fridge for a couple days? How did it turn out?
I am culling an 8-9 month old rooster today. I plan on boiling it and making chicken egg salad. Do I need to let the bird "rest" in the refrigerator for 2-3 days as some people suggests?
Thanks
I got an egg less that the size of a quarter. What is the best way to preserve it? I've heard of blowing it out. How you do make a hole in it without breaking the shell?
Thanks for any help.
I did the same thing today. I killed 2 roosters and put them in one of those "set it and forget it" things for 35-45 minutes. The meat was tough and stringy. Which I kind of was expecting.
I think the problem/answer is very simple. Barnyard chickens are NOT the same thing as Cornish hens. Any...
Hard to crack? I prefer the hard shells of truly fresh eggs. If you can't crack an egg you need to lift some weights or something. Sounds to me she has only eaten store bought eggs and doesn't know any better. Explain to her that farm fresh eggs are like that because the chickens are actually...
Look around at some decent size farming towns and check there. Then when you happen to drive through stock up. I save 4 dollars a bag for laying mash that way.
Am I correct on the proper age to slaughter them? 3-4 months? I have barred rocks and production reds and a few EE's.
Again thanks for the help. I love this place.
I want to eat a few birds (barnyard mixed breeds) that I hatch. The problem is the size and age (3-4 months old) that I want to harvest them I can't tell if they are roosters or hens yet. They look the same. I only want to eat the roosters. How does everyone else sex their birds?
Does this just mean she is figuring it out? How common is this for a first time layer? Also is it safe to eat? I'd love to make a miniature fried egg!
Thanks for any input.
It is a favorite ingubator 1200E that I received. I was wondering if it is worth money or worth hatching eggs. It seems really old.
Thanks for any help.
