This has become our new weekly bread. Although we do experiment with other ingredients (9 grain cereal, cornmeal, wheat bran, honey) we have stuck with the base formula. It was a bit too seedy for us so we dropped the sesame seeds and upped the rye (1 cup). The feedback from family and...
Thanks Pathfinders. That is just what I needed to know. My pullets have been laying for a couple of months but I hadn't found anything on when to start selecting. Now I can keep an eye on which ones to breed.
I am a rookie and haven't yet selected any eggs to hatch. At what age do you select the hens and roosters for breeding. I realize that once the hen starts laying eggs she can become fertile, but has she matured properly? Same goes for the rooster. Is it better to wait at least a year to...
Thanks for all the replys.
I went back to the General Store and talked with the manager. He indicated it was new to his store but Home Grown has been around for a while. The sales clerk thought it was a new product. So the confusion is now cleared up except I still haven't been able to...
I went to my general store yesterday to replenish my monthly supply of Purina Layena. They brought out different bags called Homegrown Layena. I indicated that it was the wrong brand. The sales clerk said it was a new brand by Purina, exactly the same as Purina Layena but cheaper. Since it...
We've done the water bath method and it will cook it slightly which loses some of the crunchy ness. We usually keep ours in the refrigerator and start a new batch when it gets low. A 5 pound batch at a time is what we work with and renew.
For us, grocery story cabbage tends to be dry probably...

Do you have any problem with the vacuum that occurs once the percolating stops? A couple of times I have found my batches diluted and was wondering if the vacuum effect draws water into the crock?
Thanks, Ron
I'm in Elgin, about 20 miles east of Austin.
A beginner hobbiest with 73 chickens of various ages. About 40 pullet/hens. The rest are roosters which will be culled after selecting breeders. Buff Orps, Mahogany RIR, Barred Rocks, and Light Brahamas. It's a lot of fun and it provides food and...
If you have a food processor and sesame seeds you can make your own tahini.
Toast about a cup of seeds in a skillet over medium heat. When they start smelling good their done, be careful because they can burn easily. Let cool. Put in a food processor and add a 1-2 Tablespoons of oil...
What kind of volume do you expect to hatch and how often. Smaller quantity = smaller incubator. Larger quantity = larger incubator. And how often? 20 a week or 20 a month? You haven't provided enough information so you can be helped. Your budget? Only brinsea? Too many unknowns.

I have a GQF Sportsman 1502 purchased used on craigs list. I also have the ova easy 190. The best bang for the buck to me is the 1502.
The 1502 has better humidity control. Temperature control is equal on both. Yes you can get the humidity pump on the 190/380 and for incubating it is truly...
I also have the 190. The only problem I have with it is the hatching process. Maintaining a higher humidity is difficult. I leveled the trays and put in extra containers of water and the highest I could get is 60%. Possibly you will have better success. If you do I sure would like to know...
My experience with them has not been positive. The buffs I got are smaller than others I have purchased from BYC members. And one rooster looks more like a bantam than standard. To me they are the equivalent of a standard hatchery except they generate volume eggs instead of chicks.
Yes you can smoke it, but be careful of how much wood you use. I usually use fruit wood or pecan, because they don't have a heavy impact on the meat. Two small pieces should be enought to penatrate a nice smoke flavor. Don't use mesquite or hickory unless you like a sharper wood flavor. The...
This is my wife's favorite, a vanilla custard modification:

2 T Flour
1/8 t Salt
1 C Milk (or Half & Half)
1 Vanilla bean (or ½ T vanilla extract)
2 T Cocoa powder
1 Sq Semisweet Chocolate (full...
Someone posted on Craiglist out of Bailey, Texas that they would teach you how to dress a chicken. Bailey I believe is just north of Dallas. The telephone listed is 214-681-1306. He advertised May 1st.
I've considered giving him a call myself just to learn how with hands on experience. But...
