Question on dead chick, picture included

Hi! These are Bielefelder's.. shipped from Chicago to Oregon...I didnt notice any air bubbles but I might not have recognized what I was seeing either, I never saw the air cell split, I have seen photos of that and was for sure looking for it. When I candled the eggs upon arrival to check for...

Question on dead chick, picture included

Thank you so much!! no matter how many times you hatch there always is a "new" experience, thats why BYC is without a doubt the best place to find answers! I just ordered another set of eggs and will go into this batch a bit more wise. Thanks to everyone who had the answers I sought!

Question on dead chick, picture included

And I hatched them all upright in an egg carton, I knew laying them down, especially the ones with saddled air cells could cause them to drown, this was one thats air cell looked pretty good and I didnt worry as much about it, now looking back and knowing it drowned it didnt lose enough...

Question on dead chick, picture included

woke up early this AM to nearly a complete hatch, two eggs left, one had started to zip , an hour later it had made no progress so I decided to watch it. Decided to give it another 30 min and if no progress then I would help, seems I waited to long :( Another chick was in the process of...

    Pipped wrong end.

Just for future reference, when I first started hatching a wise BYC member told me that if your chick pips the wrong end it can take up to 48 hours for it to hatch.. hatched normally the chick will pip into the aircell, there it will rest for up to 24 hours absorbing the remaining yolk sack...

    Hatching for pullets!

Your lucky you can sell your extra roosters, around here you are lucky to give the buggars away! That said, there is no way to ensure you get a pullet by either egg shape or incubating temperature. Your hen is who is determining the sex of the chick and if a hen is throwing more roos than...

    Hen turned aggressive

If she is indeed a hen then because you have no rooster she has taken on that roll, she will also attempt to "mount" the other hens, she thinks she is the dominant bird. On our farm no aggressive animal is allowed to remain, Chickens are fun, I love to watch them and their different...

Do my hens experience ''labor'' as they are laying an egg??

I have no doubt the hens feel something, whether its actual "labor" pains or not who knows.. As far as animals not experiencing labor pains my Nigerian Dwarf does might have something to say about that! :D:D

Why are our Wyandotte eggs so small?

I raise BLRW and it is my experience that these hens are slow growing, unlike many hens they dont reach full maturity until they are nearly 2 years old. the eggs do get a bit bigger but they dont lay an overly large egg anyways so if its extra large eggs you want a different breed might be best??

    Hatching Shipped Eggs

Day 10 was last night, candled and out of the 11 shipped eggs, two were non starters, two are questionable (left them in) and 7 look really good even with a detached/saddle aircell. Plan is to quit turning on day 16 and allow them to stay upright. I thought I might just cut out some egg...

We do try to have four seasons although blink and you might miss it lol Oregon (Willamette Valley) can be unpredictable. I haven't given my girls the BOSS , instead I hoard that for my very Pregnant goats ;) I expect some sort of a slow down in the pre winter months, back when I first...

    Hatching Shipped Eggs

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry if I came across rough, please don't apologize! There are alot of folks that dont know that there are breeds out there that are auto sexing beyond your basic sex link and I should have been more clear on my description of it. I thought about breeding and raising...

    Hatching Shipped Eggs

Thanks but I've done my research ;) The Bielefelder is a relatively new breed, development beginning in the 1970’s by Gerd Roth in the area of Bielefeld, Germany, hence the breed's name. They were successful in creating a large fast maturing dual purpose breed with a kind calm temperament...
