Went to the local feed supply house today for some "start and Grow" crumbles for my seven 4 month old chickens. Last month the price was around $10.00 for 50 lbs, today it was 18 something. They said their cost went up. OK, so I bought layer crumbles instead at 12.00. Any problem with layer...
This is a rooster that I got about 4 months ago as an ameracauna hen. OK, It's not a hen, but is it an Ameracauna? He's a beauty! Edmcm

My little 3 month old Amercauna looked normal as a chick, slowly developing a severe offset lower beak and a severe hooked top beak. Her lower beak has now become pretty much tubular shaped. She can't eat anything except crumbles, can't pick up scratch, treats, etc. But, now she is developing...

My neighbor claims that several years ago he actually read an article in some farm publication about an IQ test for chickens! Anyone ever heard of that? And, it's true, what if my chicken has a higher IQ than me???? Ed
So, I've heard of chick starter, mash, start and grow, scratch, crumbles, layer feed, and probably others. Can someone clarify just what is available and what they all are all about? Thanks, Edmcm (7 EE's, one with serious crossed beak, about 6 weeks old)
I have 7 amerecaunas, from 3 to 5 weeks old. I live in a desert area with a dry (usually) wash on the property. The clean sand has a nice range of sizes to it. I'd love to use it on the floor of their new coop, but the chicks seem to just start eating it like crazy. I'm sure it's good grit...
One of my 3 week old Ameracaunas, or maybe EEs, has a lower beak that is out of line with the upper.. the lower points over to the left, maybe 1/16th of an inch at the tip, from the upper. When you look straight down at her beak from the top, you see the inside part of the lower beak setting...
Hi, Got 7 chicks 3 days ago, about 2 weeks old, bought as ameracaunas but probably EEs. Anyhow, today I added an 18 inch by 18 inch cardboard box up against their brooder box, with an access door that I can open or close. It's supposed to be their playpen, and I put about 1 inch of sand in it...
Hi all, it seems that many here use food grade DE in the coop and elsewhere. On the DE bag, there is a warning against inhaling it, and advising the use of a mask when working with it. So - If it's that bad for our lungs, wouldn't you expect some effects on the chickens that dust in it? What...
Not that I'll do that, but I'm curious as to how well chickens do in cold weather, how much cold they are at least semi-comfortable in, and wondering if they would do all right in 20 degree weather in an unheated coop. Thanks, Ed (No chickens yet, building a coop and pen right now)
Hi, Just joined the group and have a question. I'm in the process of building a coop and yard for a few chickens, thinking about 4 aracaunas and 2 leghorns. (no rooster) Is there any potential problem with keeping those two breed together? Thank you, edmcm2000. (
They'll be in an 8 x 8 coop...
