    Adding to flock

So I am considering getting 4 black austrolorps supposedly they just started laying. I am just concerned about mixing them with my birds. Currently I have a 20x10 dog kennel with a 4x6 coop attached to one end. My newest chickens, now 2, never slept in coop, but on roosts in the covered/tarped...

    Hi!

Hi everyone! I have owned chickens for 5+ years now. This website was easily the most valuable resource I found on chicken raising. I have a mixed flock because I Like the variety, I love aracauna, black austrolorpes, and Brahmas are probably one of my all time favorites. Currently I have 6...

    Coop fire

The local fire dept responded to a structure fire last night, by the time they arrived it was fully engulfed and almost on the ground. This morning I was told it was a chicken coop. The cause of the fire was a heater, too close to hay. Chickens survived, chicks did not. Chick season is here...

    too many scraps?

I work in a restaurant, I have a few customers who also have chickens and of course we talk about them. One day one guy says ,"with this job you probably pay next to nothing for feed" So I get thinking, and I put out a chicken bucket, and I collect scraps, and in the morning I dump the bucket...

    Polish hen laying!

Read mixed reviews on this, is she a layer, or ornamental? She is laying better than the Easter eggers. I get an egg every other day from her, and they are almost the same size as the larger chickens, just more narrow. I have 4 Easter eggers, and have never gotten two green eggs in same day...

    winter treats.

What do you treat chickens with in winter? When the grass is gone, and the garden is done, there are no more apples on the ground beneath the trees. I would like to keep them eating fresh, but think that could get expensive. What do you do?

    will they do it themselves?

In an effort to make my chicken run fun for the girls, adding roosts, and boxes, I have created an environment that encouraged them to roost in the run. Didn't care, as long as warm enough. My first coop is a 4x2 box, set up wrong, given to us by a man who got it free from Craig's list, he says...

    introducing new coop

New coop almost finished, 12 chicks, now 16 weeks, have been roosting in the run all summer in spite of having two small coops within the 20 x 10 dog kennel run. They use the coops for their siestas, and for dusting in the shavings. About to open up to a new winterized coop they will "hopefully"...

    New member

Hello! Got my first six chickens May 24th of this year. 4 "aracauna" but they grew tails, it's ok, pretty that way and all so different, and two crested polish. The polish were straight run and one is a rooster. The following week went to feed store. Ooh, different breeds! Came home with 2...

    2 roosters in mixed flock

New to chickens this spring, my flock is 15 weeks old and two of twelve are roosters, a light brahma and a black crested. So far no issues, but most of what I have read on here says 10 hens per roo, and I have five. Also brahma twice the size of everyone easily, will he hurt my girls mounting...
